Hello everybody hope everyone having a good one. I wanna share my experience with rear differential fluid change and have some questions. After reading so many threads today I finally changed my rear differential fluid on my 21 cm 2wd tundra. Mileage was 32k. After coming back from work ( which about 7 mile ride) since my driveway inclined I ended up parking the truck front yard on the grass where it looked level. When I loosen the fill plug I saw some oil start coming out completely took off the fill plug and there was a small puddle of oil came out. Kind a worried me and made me think maybe I'm not %100 on flat serfice. Anyway took drain plug out and drained the oil. Oil looked little cloudy but not so dark. What surprised me was what stuck on drain plug magnet. There was so much gunk and 1 piece of shaving( please see pictures). Installed new washer and installed drain plug and filled it up with Valvoline 75w-90 full synthetic gear oil with gl5.it took little less than 4 quarts. Should I worry about that shaving piece and amount of fluid I put it back?

On the first oil change, that type of shaving isn't uncommon. It would be a little disconcerting, but unless you are getting other symptoms like whine, growl, or howl, I'd ignore it for now. The other crud on the plug is 100% normal.

As for oil level, just under 4 quarts is perfect. Yes, you may be able to squeeze a little more fluid in there if you were perfectly level or even had the drivers side tire lower than the passenger side, but a little less than 4 quarts is spot on.

I've done a dozen rear end drain and fills on my '13. I wouldn't be concerned.

Thank you very much for the response. No as far as I can tell I'm not having any of those symptoms but I'll pay more attention in the future

You might not have been exactly level or maybe the diff fluid expanded a bit because you drove it 7 miles.
I did the rear diff (my only diff) on my 2008 last month. It had the same gunk on the magnet minus the curly-Q that yours had. I also used Valvoline 75W-90. It wasn't crazy dark, but had quite a funky smell to it. It reminded me of the smell that the limited slip additive had for my 2003 Tacoma (clutch time LSD).

Seems to be. I pulled both axles last year to change wheel bearings. The oil coating the splines looked like new oil. New bearings, reinstalled and am driving it every day. It is on my list to change it out, though.

Got a coworker with a 2002 Tacoma 2WD bought new. He's never changed the diff oil. Passed 600,000 miles two months ago. I just can't be that willy-nilly.
