I have a non hybrid with 8,000 miles. MPG is 15.6 mostly city driving. Any thoughts on how to improve?

That's pretty normal for city miles, especially if you spend a lot of time at stop lights, and have the AC cranking.

I was hoping for more in mine. The best tank I’ve gotten is about 20. Worst has been about 16. I do a lot of highway miles.

I’m not impressed with it, but I’m not upset either.

I’ve seen quite a few here indicate it gets better with more miles on the clock, upwards of 5-10k.

    I’m just under 5k.

As others note, that's pretty normal.

You can see 20s on the highway, wind at your back, flat level road, and speeds 60 or less. No joking

The EPA mileage estimates you see advertised are derived from testing in controlled environments, not real world driving conditions. They are always higher than actual mileage.

That’s not my experience. I’ve had several vehicles that I could exceeded epa numbers, including Toyotas.

I've had a few cars over the years that got exceptionally great gas mileage. My 2 Nissan Sentras (1985/1988) both got 35-40 MPG. Such great cars. Extremely reliable and did everything I needed them to do. 2 of the best cars I've ever had. That being said, I didn't buy my Tundra for the gas mileage.

I found that ECO mode is not very ECO….was getting 15 or so. Changed to normal and getting 17 to 18. Rural driving

Our experiences are different, then. My last 6 trucks, including my 2008 and 2015 Tundras, never got the advertised EPA mileage. And I'd challenge anyone who claims they consistently get the advertised 22 mpg on the highway in a Gen 3 Tundra, especially at Interstate speeds.

I just got back from a 5000 mile roundtrip in my '23. I wasn't heavily loaded, just a few suit cases, my wife, and 2 dogs. I routinely checked mileage at every fuel up. The best tank full was 18.5 mpg in Kansas with a strong tailwind.

I get better mileage in my 24' Sequoia than I ever did in my 14' 4runner, good enough for me.

    Fair points.

I’ll qualify my experience with this being my first actual truck. Maybe the protocol for trucks is different?

I was able to do better than epa on a 2024 4Runner and an ‘11 fj.

Gang, I was able to get that in gen2. Granted, it took some effort, but gen3 is supposedly even more efficient.

Maybe you use pedal wrong? My uncle whenever driving cars has this tendency to push pedal and release, constantly push and release. Maybe you suffer from similar handicap?:)

That’s norm here in CA with crappy gas and traffic signals every 1/8th of a mile. In WA where we had better fuel, very few traffic lights and mostly round-abouts I was getting 18 city.

Forget the built in MPG thing. It wildly penalizes short trips. I could have 100 miles of 24+ MPG and ONE trip to the store 1.5 miles away drops it to 16 MPG.

Kind of back of napkin math I am at 18-19 MPG. Readout says 16.4. Not even fucking close, lol.

I understand that the EPA estimates for MPG are done under the best of conditions and I expected my mileage would be less. But they advertise 22/17/19. I was expecting 20/15/17. I'm getting 16/13/15.3. I think I have an average foot on the pedal. I now have under 3k on the odometer so hopefully it will get better.

The turbo gauge shows the turbos running only when I accelerate. Is that normal? I thought the twin turbos make the ignition of the fuel more efficient thereby using less fuel for the same level of fuel.

In my fleet I have had a ton of hemi Rams, and the I6 Ram. All of them much better fuel economy than my 24 tundra.
This motor is just not economical and nowhere close to epa reported mileage.

Your realized mileage seems low. Are you running a lift and big tires?

I feel the rated mileage is accurate, just that most drivers are constantly on either the gas or brake. I get over the rated mileage, just gotta drive it easy and not be mashing the gas and brake pedal.

Weird I drive mostly back roads in the south 45-65 mph and break 22 mpg daily. Upper teens when I run into town and hit red lights. Pretty easy to get 600 miles to a tank for the way I drive.

I am satisfied with my Tundra MPG. I routinely get 21-22 on road trips driving 70-75 MPH. That along with the 32-gallon tank gives incredible range. I have done 1025 mile runs to FL on one refill and still have enough gas left over to drive for another week there.

I have a stock limited with no lift, am pretty easy on the gas, and try not to get the turbo's going too often.
I haven't been able to get above 15 mpg yet and I don't get how some are in the 18-20 range, but I don't loose sleep over it either.

Agreed on the RAM. I had a 1/2 ton 2014 hemi and averaged 18.
