2021 Tundra SR5 TRD Offroad Package
Good afternoon guys, I recently bought a 2021 tundra sr5 crewmax with the the TRD offroad package. As I've began getting used to the truck, I've noticed the engine is really noisy. I know there are other threads on this noisy engine topic, but no one ever posts a video of what is "normal", I hear a lot of "ticking" real light at idle and acceleration around buildings.

I cant upload a video for whatever reason, so could you guys post a video of the engine running from the wheel wells, at idle? Im just trying to figure out if I should be concerned or if what I hear is the norm. Thanks!

Search around on here, there are numerous threads on the topic. But yes, it is a noisy engine. 5w-30, iirc, often quiets it down. Figure out how to upload a video, the helpful folks here will likely offer you the assurance you seek.

YT links work well for me...use 5w30 and have 20% less noise...that figure is made up, but it definitely quiets it down...big trucks make big noises...welcome!!

That's a terrible sound!! Are your exhaust manifolds leaking air or the SAIP tube blowing into the atmosphere? Or are my headphones needing replaced? I heard that tick, but the other sounds are akin to an airhose blowing into your microphone!

My concern is the rattle and tick noise. That fan air noise comes and goes. It's 92 degrees today and I had been driving for a bit, air conditioning was on so it was loud.

@HulkSmurf14 I'm gonna assume your truck doesn't have the tick or rattle noise?

Tick noise is a couple non-issue things...usually...5w30 in hot weather will make your truck quieter...it will do nothing but make your engine happier, too...I'm not going to go into that but there are around 38 threads on what oil and why and they all come down to one synapsis...it's your choice and is speculative. So fear less about the tick. The fan noise caught me off guard...I'm used to the 2-80 A/C in the summer months...x2 windows down and drive 80! I'm not sure on the rattle noise...could be a few things that might be loose...heat shields around exhaust, plastic bits not fully secured...what's it sound like from above, like in the engine bay?

We all have a tick but I've switched to 5w30 and it's gone...I do not have any rattles, though. I couldn't quite discern what was rattling in the video, however. Where or whom did you buy it from...private sale or dealership? I feel you're alright with how it is, but it is much louder than a RAM, Chevy, or Ford...fear not, they last longer!

I bought it from Coughlin Toyota, so a dealer. I've had 0 issues in the 2k miles I have already put on the clock, its at 80,300 miles. In 2k miles I'll do 5w/30 and keep on going. The tick really is my main concern, there isnt much of a rattle tbh. From above, it sounds like that video i posted, just a lot less quiet, more fan sounding from above.

Throw some thicker oil in and just keep smiling. You have an amazing truck that will be more reliable than you probably want it to be. I try to only upgrade things when things wear out...nothing but oil has been wearing out on my truck so the fun now never stops :p haha

10w-30 really quieted it down for me
I have tried 0w and 5w as well, I honestly don't see any point in the 0w because the engine will never get good mpg

If I lived in AZ or So Cal, I'd use 10w30...in the north, 5w30 is good enough.

If I were concerned, I would take it back to the dealer and ask them if it is normal. Get a mechanic, not a salesman or a service advisor. It won't take them but a minute.

Normal in my mind, it quiets as time goes on and you drive more.

Nope lol, I live in southeast Indiana, I just drove 3 hours 1 way to get the truck. They had it priced right and had what I wanted. Next closest was 7 hours near north Chicago.
