I have been looking into getting a used Tundra and have been checking the VIN's by using (https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls) to see if the vehicle for sale falls under the engine recall.

Doing that worked fine for a while, but maybe 2 months ago, it stopped showing anything for any Tundra VIN I tried.

    Anyone know why?

No they haven't. Our local dealerships have quite a few that are waiting for engines to arrive.

No, Toyota is currently in phase 3 of engine replacements. There are 4 phases that Toyota are replacing engines in. This is based on the date the truck was manufactured on. They are replacing or at least attempting to replace 25,000 every 3 to 4 months. Phase 4 starts at the end of July.

Also not all owners are replacing their engines as soon as they are available to be replaced. Some folks are gonna ride on their current engines as long as possible. Toyota has not said that the owner is required to replace the engine in a specific time frame.

yeah our 2023 is within the recall vin's, but it only has 14,xxx miles on it in 2 yrs. not in a hurry to replace it and i imagine there are others that have a more pressing need to have there blown engines replaced before ours.

Incorrect. They are currently on Phase 4 of 7. Phase 5 will be announced Q3 2025. Toyota/NHTSA have not uploaded the latest document that was released May 29, 2025.

So, if you choose to delay your engine replacement when your phase comes up, do you forfeit your position to the end of last phase? Or can you schedule it any time you want?

Edit: It's my understanding that Toyota is covering towing and other expenses incurred when these engines blow up. Would they have grounds to deny those expenses, if you chose to delay your replacement, then had your engine blow up afterwards?

i havent delayed anything at the moment. but i also havent been notified by my dealer to schedule a replacement appt.

i am in no hurry to replace it currently. the only thing i have right now is the lack of mpg but i really cant compare since its within the norm for ND due to constant winds on the highway and mostly city driving by the spouse.

the 2023 tundra tracks closely to our 2018 tundra in overall mpg per tank outside of highway trips that bump up the mpg.

i have heard some people getting replacment engines and the mpg went closer to the stated window sticker mpg ratings.

1st pic is our 2018 tundra stats and
2nd pic is our 2023 tundra stats

both are platinum 4x4 5.5ft bed crewcab non HV (ignore total time stats since it never stops counting even if your retire/sell a vehicle)
