Rear Dash Cam

Sorry about this. I can't seem to find the thread where I thought I saw someone had done this.
For those with a DC (and therefore a power sliding rear window) that have a rear dash cam, where/how are you mounting it? I'm toying with sliding some kind of bracket under the headliner at the rear, but ideally want to see how others have done it. A 3D printed part, even PETG might have a hard time holding up in the Texas heat. Just wondering if anyone has already solved this problem?

 

I have not gotten a rear mirror cam but I have considered it. This would likely work from Etsy to mount the camera above the rear window

Hmmm. That might actually do it. It's in ABS, which will take the heat. I haven't tried printing in ABS as it is apparently a bear to work with without a heated enclosure. I'd have to print it on it's side and without the enclosure, it's likely it would not turn out well. This guy has already done it.

I'm going to go ahead and order one. $18.75 shipped might seem a little pricey, but it's not worth the guys while to do it for less, I'm not having to faff around trying to get ABS to print at room temp cleanly and it could FINALLY be off my todo list on the Tundra!

Dashcam store sells a metal bracket that you truck into the weather stripping. Recommend getting the smaller size for less vibration. I've tried both..

Yeah, I saw that one just not sure how my cam (Rexing) mounts to this bracket. Mine has adhesive. Yours too?

 

I don’t think that metal one will fit on 1st gen double cab in the same way.

 

The cam has adhesive but it also has holes to use hardware to mount. If I were to use screws I'd drill holes into the bracket. For now the adhesive is working fine for me.

@Fragman So I just realized you said you have a double cab. This bracket is designed mainly for the crew ab models where the entire window rolls down. Can't you stick the camera to a section of your rear window that won't interfere with the sliding center window? Your entire rear window is 3 pieces, right? Or are you wanting it to be dead center?

 

On a Gen 1, the Double Cab is the one with the full size doors and the 'slide up and down' window. You're thinking of the what they call the Access Cab. As to @bretto24 's question, I haven't gotten around to installing it yet!

 

@TacomaTRD4x402 The entire window goes down. There is no place to mount on the window as it totally disappears. Unless someone is disciplined enough (I'm not, LOL) to not power it all the way down. I, too would like to put the window down on days the temp allows but don't right now because of the cam.

Hey Fragman, have you gotten around to installing your dash cam with the rear mount yet?

 

No, but I intend to take next week off and if it's not a bazillion degrees, will be running it then as well as my Master tailgater camera feed.

 

Installing the cam is fairly easy and doesn't take that long. I highly recommend a dongal if the power wire hanging down from the cam bothers you (it bothers me, lol).
