What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

I was hoping I didn't have to resort to an impact to save the money. 1/2" drive is next .

 

Mapp gas HEAT. If you want to break a bolt off going up to 1/2" drive is the way. unsolicited opinion stated. I wish you the best though

I recently changed out the rubber bushing on the right side of the steering rack. The impact had no effect. The 1/2" bar had no effect so I added a 3 foot extension to the bar and even then it only budged when I put all of my body weight (230lbs) on it. After a couple of 1 inch movements it was finally loose enough for the impact to finish the job. Whatever the factory uses to tighten these bolts/nuts it ain't a torque wrench no matter what their specs say. Get yourself a 3 foot piece of pipe to slide onto the end of the bar for more leverage.

Just got my rack and pinion replaced (ordered oem from toyota) realized I probably forgot the bushings. Driver side is definitely cracked here. Passenger doesnt look as bad. I should obviously get these replaced right? Could they also be potentially contributing to steering wheel shake/wobble?

 

Those don’t look bad to me. The only “crack” I see in the bushing is the split that lets you open the bushing to place in over the sway bar during install.

 

Ah ok, yeah that's what i was talking about in the 1st picture. Well I'll probably have a lot of things to track down then, another balance even though I just got one--could be that the place that did my brake upgrade knocked some weights off. Could be UCA bushings

 

I bought those swaybar bushings for my truck. Then deleted my swaybar before installing them. I was replacing mine just because they were firm. Yours don’t look bad at all.

 

Ok good to know. I'm leaning towards just pulling the trigger on OEM new UCA and putting new pre-assembled 4600 w/coilovers. (I did read the mega thread about it and fine with just having stock rode feel, no plan on lift anytime soon, and the cheaper option)

LOF today, did the dip stick mod, it’s still a pain in the ass to see the level with clean oil

Lol. it aint arco. Wonder if adding graphite to my mobile 1 will hurt anything, it’ll at least make it dark enough to see.

I’m still trying to understand how it’s an issue. When I look at my unmodified dipstick, I just turn the dipstick to see how the oil level glistens in the sun. It’s either readable on the front or back depending upon how you pull it out. It’s always slightly golden when new.

 

I can see the layer better if i use a flashlight.

for weight reduction i might drill 5-6 1/16” holes & hope surface tension helps me read it at a glance. No squinting necessary. Might have some golden varnish on the dipstick. Adding a couple glugs of MMO @ 4k miles helps to read it @ 5k.

Today I replaced the intermediate carrier bearing. What a PITA! The bolt heads were rusted too much for a socket to grab hold and after several attempts at alternate methods I bit the bullet and drilled the bolts out. Laying on my back trying to apply pressure while attempting to drill vertically wore me out, especially with all the hot shavings falling on my hands. Next up is the rear u-joint then, theoretically, I'm done underneath.

 

PA has to be the ‘expert difficulty’ life server, right? Yall get eff’d from all directions.

 

Don't you have to swap all your torque wrenches for impact wrenches to become ASE certified?

 

Did another change on rear differential oil.
Still grungy. Do another in about 3K miles.

Started doing slow flush on the power steering fluid. Draining reservoir, filling, driving and repeat.

Can't remember if it was you that said you didn't have a smartphone, but if you have a way to take some pics and post them up we'd love to see the truck doing truck stuff.

 

I plan to a full clean, and flush of reservoir soon.
Can’t think where my other floor jack went, to raise both sides, and just want to start getting some of that old thin fluid out.

Don’t know what they used but was as thin as water. Have to actually pump it out now compared to just getting it started and it siphoned out on its own in beginning.

Steering is getting lot better.

 

Do you raise the front in the center with a single jack then block each side with a jack stand, or jack each side frame rail?

100%. Take it to the sunlight when the oil is new. If you think this dipstick is hard, you would shit trying to read the 5th Gen 4Runner dipstick.
