How can you tell if you have a bad rear wheel bearing other than noise? Is there a way to check?

When I was dealing w a bad rear diff, I jacked up the rear end with both tires off the ground, supported the axle safely on jackstands, and put the truck in drive, with my wife in the cab on the brakes.

I took one of my cheap stethoscopes, took the bell off, and inserted a straight piece of copper tubing, to make my own diagnostic mechanic stethoscope. I'd have my wife let off the brakes and then use the scope to determine where the grinding was coming from. My wheel bearings were fine, my differential, it was boogered bad.

I feel like something sounds loose or not right but no one can find any issues including myself. Ive checked everything and been having a certain howling issue which is very low for a few years now it just bugs me.

I developed a pinion seal leak for the second time and an absolute banshee scream of a bad bearing while on a fishing trip to UT. I had the truck regeared by a local shop about 2 years and 15k miles ago, and have had nothing but issues w the front and rear diffs since then.

This write-up from ZUK details how poorly my diffs had been installed by the shop.

Damn i really like how detailed ZUK is and how bad the previous shop butchered your gear install.

I got the truck back up and running, and on the road on saturday and let me tell you....it is so damn quiet now. I think my "new" gears from the first install were boogered from the get go.

The 5.29s are great, and with the cryo and REM, no break in cycle is needed.

    Any resolution on your noise?

No resolution as of now, it drives good and no heat from the diff so eventually ill get it back to the shop to have it looked at. It could very well be an echo from wind noise since i feel like my truck is loud on the inside but who knows at this point. Glad to hear you got your situation all taken care of.

I had a bad passenger rear wheel bearing replaced under warranty around 40k miles. Started as a faint hum resonating in the cab at 30, 45, 60, and 75+ mph. The noise would fade in and out as you got close to those speeds and was obviously coming from the rear of the truck. 60mph was the worst speed (where it was the loudest) and then that faster you went over 70-75mph the louder it got. Eventually it got so god awful loud it was like I had a Honda with a fart can exhaust driving next to me, it vibrated the whole cab and I could feel it in my seat.

My 2019 has been making a noise for about two years. Dealer put noise sensors on it with negative findings. In kicks in around 50 mph and road noise drowns it by 70 mph. Best guess is a wear pattern on the tires. Before alignment, the tow was at maximum and feathered the outer edges. Bearings and ujoints usually get louder and more metallic once they start talking. No way they will last very long.

That sounds like exactly what my truck is doing with the same speeds and all.

I also have some kind of clunking noise in the rear when my suspension flexes some. Has anyone experienced that as well?
