Transmission Cooler Bracket Kit - Hayden 679 / 689

It looks like the 679/689 are the same in size as the 699 with the exception being the height and length are switched.

When adding a cooler to the 2019 - 2021 years, you add the OEM thermostat. The thermostat gives you the temperature regulation as well as the inlet/outlet barbs.

The Hayden 699 has a built in thermostat essentially. This would be redundant in addition to the OEM unit that gets installed.

The Hayden 699 is rated the exact same as the 679 and 689 for towing capacity (10,000lbs) and GVWR (22,000lbd). I’m always open to thoughts and improvements, but I see no difference expect the extra thermostat in the 699.

Hey @Jmunk will this work with the Magnuson 2650 supercharger I have on my 2021? Not sure how is all going to fit in the front? I am interested in this kit for sure.

 

I haven’t tried one so I can’t say for sure. If you have a photo of your truck with front grill off I should be able to verify fitment from that.

Any of you fellas run the 3/8 rubber hose all the way and not use hard lines in the middle? I was gone wrap them in a protective cover that they use on heavy equipment hydraulic lines. What you all think

I got the bracket yesterday; the Hayden 689 should be arriving tomorrow. Hoping to get it installed by next weekend. Will stop by the dealership to buy the fluid this week. Seems like a sturdy well made potency!??

After more and more installs I prefer a 90 fitting on the top and bottom port. This photo shows my preferred grommet placement in the wind deflector.

 

Installed the 2016 Sequoia cooler today. Everything went great.

After reviewing multiple sources regarding transmission fluid flow and routing, I decided on the following configuration: the top (outlet) port of the thermostat is routed to the bottom (inlet) port of the cooler, and the top (outlet) port of the cooler is routed back to the bottom (inlet) port of the thermostat.

This particular transmission had not been serviced for the first 120,000 miles of its life. Given this, I was cautious about replacing a large volume of fluid all at once. I chose to drain approximately 2 quarts and refill with 3.5 quarts. After following the proper procedure to verifying fluid level, about half a quart drained out.

My plan moving forward is to replace 2 quarts during each oil change over the next few intervals. I’m hoping this gradual approach will mitigate the risk of transmission issues stemming from the previously infrequent maintenance.

We'll be driving through the hot desert next week, so I’ll report back with updated transmission temperatures now that the cooler is installed.

I was just looking at if I could make one of these work on my 2017 with a Harrop supercharger and front mounted intercooler. Looks like it will have to share the bottom left mount point with the intercooler pump mount, but that should not be a real problem. The bigger issue looks like the cooler would be in the same general location as the intercooler pump and hose where it comes out of the intercooler and into the suction. I could see it being mounted more easily biased to the drivers side if it was reversible and I could drill new mounting holes on the lower radiator support. Maybe it would hit the AC liquid line on that side however.

What kind of temps does everyone see with these with a pinned open thermostat and/or plumbed in series with the factory cooler that is part of the AC condenser? I’m curious what the btu capacity of this Hayden cooler is vs the factory one. Is it capable of more cooling?

 

Silver17, you already have a cooler. You should be GTG. ‘19+ owners have no cooler at all.

 

I do have one yes, but I tow a 7k+ camper around in hilly terrain. I have my thermostat pinned open at all times and if I’m hitting a lot of longer hills and my TC is unlocked I still see it climbing over 200 in my pan sometimes. I’m looking for more cooling capacity to keep it around 180 max. I prefer it to be as cool as possible in all scenarios, personally.

 

Are you averse at removing the passenger wind wing or modifying it? Opens up a lot of cooling options and routing. I've had both removed since 2012 and never noticed any changes.

 

A few have over on the DIY $300 transmission cooler thread. Wrapping g with heat shield or using braided hose works.

 

Pre Hayden cooler I saw temps approaching 215 during casual Southern California driving. It seems like our ‘16 Sequoia runs cooler than my ‘19 Tundra. My Tundra could get up over 220 easy. I never checked tranny temps when air temps were above 85 but next week we will be in Palm Desert with 110+ temps. I’ll report back max temps in Sequoia.

 

Not if it doesn’t have any other adverse effects, wouldn’t bother me! Thanks for the suggestion. Gonna check out Snivs trans cooler thread more closely too. If not for the intercooler interference I like this bracket/cooler setup.

 

For information I have the Hayden 689 and a 2019. Quick questions for those who have done it -
1. How tight do the AN fittings fit into the radiator? Do they have to tighten down and “lock” into place or are they supposed to be a bit “loose” so the barb can spin? Mine don’t tighten down to “lock” into place.
2. Should I use teflon tape or thread locker on the fittings?
3. Are the hard lines advised? I was going to try to use oil hose all the way to the thermostat but started second guessing myself.

Answers to the questions above are much appreciated.

I hand tightened and then did about another 1/4 turn. No leaks!

I did not use tape or thread locker.

3. Are the hard lines advised?

I used the hard lines. I didn’t want issues with hoses and heat in the area where the hard lines go.

travel update:

We drove the ‘16 Sequoia through the desert. Air temps got up to 108. No trailer but definitely a full load of 5 people + luggage.

AT Oil #1 (Pan)- Temps didn’t get above 200.

AT Oil #2 (Torque Converter )- Only momentary spikes above 210.

 

1. You want them decently snug, the sealing happens at the flare not in the threads.

2. You can use tape, not necessary but I don’t foresee it causing any issues.

3. I have ran hardlines for all the installs I’ve done. Someone people have had good results with heat wrapped rubber lines. I just prefer the hardlines myself.

 

Ok I have the hard lines on order. I installed and ran the lines for the cooler - have them zip tied under the skid plate until the fluid and hard lines arrive. I have the thermostat and inlet / outlet tubes ready to install as well. I have enough fluid to do a drain and fill…..after having an issue in a trip to the mountains this past week.
