Thought this add on was stupid, but it has been amazing to lock in garbage can from sliding around, using it as a gate to keep the dogs under the tonneau cover. locking gatorade jugs close to the tailgate. Happily surprised at the purchase.

I didn't, there was/is no pressing need for my uses.

It is an awesome tonneau cover though.

Now I'm really confused. I think I would like a solid one that rises with a hinge. But I'm not sure at all. Everyone has a nice truck, and one person said they run their truck through a car wash. Now i'm not sure I would run this 70 thousand dollar vehicle through any car wash, I MIGHT because I'm cripple but boy. not sure on that one.

SyneticUSA MR Retractable PRO (without factory bed rails)

Last week, I installed a SynticUSA MR Retractable PRO tonneau cover on my 2011 Crewmax. SyneticUSA offers options of “with factory bed rails” and “without factory bed rails”. I opted for the “without factory bed rails” as my Tundra doesn’t have factory bed rails.

I had been shopping (for quite some time) for a retractable tonneau cover. Retrax and a couple of other vendors offer retractable covers, but they are in the $2k-$2500 range on price. I was walking through a parking lot earlier this year, and I walked past a 2nd Gen Tundra with a retractable tonneau cover that had a SyneticUSA logo on it. I looked it over, and it got me interested. I went home and started researching. I looked at the vendor’s website, and I started Googling reviews for this cover. Apparently, there is another vendor that sells these covers also, but they may be rebranded by SyneticUSA for that company. These covers appear to be knock-offs of the Retrax models. There was a label on the cover cannister that says “Made in China”. The materials may be lesser quality than what the US versions are using, but I can’t confirm that. The Retrax covers come with limited lifetime warranties while the SyneticUSA covers come with a 5 year warranty. I don’t know what the expected service life of Retrax (or the like) covers are. I know what the covers (soft, tri-folds, and retractable) look like after 5 years on friends, familiy, and coworker trucks (all kept in various environments: garages, carports, no-shelter, etc). I felt comfortable enough to spend the $1k on the SyneticUSA cover. This doesn’t appear to be a commonly used product on this forum (at least going by the very scant results from doing searches on the forum), so I’ll be able to provide an assessment of the cover, as best as I can, over time as I use it. (So if anyone has questions, please ask, and I’ll do my best to answer).

The cover was shipped via UPS and was delivered in good condition with no damage to either the box, the cover, or any of the cover components.

I did the install myself in my garage. The instructions said not to use power tools for installing the cover. (A caveat: The previous owner of my truck had the bed liner sprayed in, and they sprayed the drain covers. I need to work something out there so that I can install the drain tubes, which I have not done yet. So I don’t have the drain tubes installed yet). The install was easy, even doing it alone. I recommend reading through the included instruction book, then watching the install video on their website. I had no issues installing this cover. I shoved the entire box as it was shipped into the bed of my truck, then unboxed the cover from there. Doing it that way kept me from having lift unpacked parts into the bed of the truck and put into place. Most of the tools needed for the install were included with the parts kits that come with the cover. I used a tape measure to help align the rails and make sure the cover was positioned correctly. The estimated install time listed on the instruction book and website say 1 hour. It took me 2 (and change), but I was not in any hurry, and I was kind of farting around at a leisure pace. It’s an easy install. (Despite what some of the reviews state about installation. I had no issues at all. YMMV).

There is an “alignment bar” included, which upon examination, I discovered that it is actually a spare slat (used on the cover) that is included to help align the tracks parallel to each other down the length of the truck bed. That alignment bar did come in handy when I set it at close to the tailgate when adjusting the position of the tracks.

The materials state the slats are powder coated aluminum. They seem durable and like they would weather the elements well, but time will tell on that. All the pieces fit well together, and the cover slides well down the tracks, and the cover opens and closes effortlessly.

This cover has 2 locks at the tailgate end, rather than just 1 lock like most comparable models have. The locks are actually clamps that bite down on the cover tracks as opposed to a pin and slot type locking mechanism. The clamping mechanisms have rubber feet so as not to damage or mar the rails, and the mechanisms are adjustable. A pair of keys were included for the locks. The locking mechanisms are strong/tough enough to require a thief to destroy the cover to get into it. For my work, I am often in need of a ladder, and I can lock my 5’ ladder in the bed with this cover, and I have the same expectations for theft deterrence that I would with any other cover. That checks a box for me.

Before addressing water resistance/proofing, let’s talk about expectations. I know that is a priority topic with some people when talking about tonneau covers. Some people expect that there will be a small amount of moisture that will make it into the bed despite the cover, especially depending on the cover type. Other people expect submarine level water proofing. For me and for what I wanted to spend, my expectations are that retractable covers have a lot of moving parts, and by their conceptual design, they are going to be more susceptible to leaking or allowing water into the bed to some degree. The SyneticUSA cover comes with strips of adhesive weather stripping to help seal the cover, and the track rails have rubber seal (flaps) down the length of the rails. There are 4 drain tubes from the cannister that need to be installed that are designed to drain any water that gets into the cannister to the outside of the bed rather than draining it into the bed itself. I do not know how well this tonneau cover seals the bed against moisture as I have only had it for 1 week as of this writing. I have not tested with a garden hose yet either as the weather has not been warm enough for me to go out and play in the water. That will have to come in a follow up review. I’ll say this about my expectations of water resistance/proofing with any tonneau cover. If I am transporting something in my bed (that fits under the tonneau cover) that I really don’t want to be wet (or that should not get wet), I will take similar precautions as I would if transporting items in the bed without a cover. I’ll wrap the contents in plastic or trash bags to help keep the contents dry, or I’ll use totes, if applicable. But that’s me. Again, YMMV.

This model of tonneau cover comes with built in t-slot tracks also. As of this writing, I have not used them yet. That assessment will have to come in a follow up review.

One week in, and I’m very happy with my purchase so far. The cover does not rattle at all going down the road or even hitting bumps. I’ve not owned a pickup with a tonneau cover until this one, so I’m unfamiliar with the effects that a cover has on driving the vehicle aside from possibly providing slightly better gas mileage due to reducing the drag from the open bed and tailgate. (If that's a real thing). However, it seemed like the handling was slightly more stable, especially when driving in the wind. Now that may be completely my imagination, but it seemed to have a slight/minor effect. Again, I could have just been imagining it. I’ll admit my own ignorance on such things. Someone more knowledgeable on such things to confirm or deny.

So, one week in, and I’m happy with my purchase thus far, but time will tell. I’ll follow up on how it is holding up as I continue to use it. (I'll get better photos on a sunny day).

6 months in, and I'm still quite happy with it.

It doesn't rattle when I drive, it's effortless to roll open and shut, the locks are still smooth and give a solid hold, and still doesn't really leak (maybe a few drips in a corner here and there after a rain or wash). So still meeting my needs and exceeding my expectations at 6 months in.
