Is the general recommendation to just pin the thermostat and run with it pinned as a permanent solution?

My recommendation- pin the thermostat and monitor the transmission temperature. If it stays most of the time in 170-180 and below and only occasionally go up to 195-200 You are good
If you see most of the time in 200 and above, go for the cooler.

But is is mine opinion for whatever it worth.
I gust know the older gens of 4runners dont have any thermostats and i never heard about the transmission problems. Not saying there are none, but not many for sure.
My 2009 sr5 4runner with 245,000 miles I never saw go above 165-170 without any cooler. I change ATF every 60K miles.
    My $0.02

    Nitrogen filled tires!
I looked at that Hayden unit strictly because of the thermal bypass and being in a climate that is "cooler." Ultimately decided to go with the Derale because I thought it was a higher quality unit. I also think pinning the thermostat is a must - I ran mine Derale without the thermostat being pinned and the results were not what I considered acceptable for towing. Regardless of which (Hayden or Derale) you purchase pin the thermostat and get the largest unit that will fit behind the grill. FYI - Derale tells you the volume of coolant necessary to fill the unit - kind of makes that part of the install easier.

Thanks for the input, I'll definitely be pinning the T-stat ASAP, and hopefully complete the install within the month. Not sure why Toyota big brains have to over complicate this basic stuff. Like the accumulator on my 3rd gen MT clutch, just dumb.
Thanks for all the great info throughout this thread!!

Saw this on the 3rd Gen Performance and Tuning section, speaks about an add on heat exchanger that is also supposed to cool down the transmission temperature.

I've been able to test my afe power cooler kit a bit more. Assuming the carscanner pid is correct, my trans temps hover at 200° once warmed up.

Pulling 7000# on a steep grade in 99° ambient, it got to 210°. It quickly dropped back to 200° when things leveled out. It seems to me that the aux the cooler allowing the thermostat to operate as intended.

I have a trip in July that will include a big climb. It will be the harshest conditions my trans will ever see. Hopping for sub-220° with a rapid cool down back to 200° when the grade levels off.

At those temps, and only 4-5 times a year, I'm comfortable with my annual drain/fill.

I have not. I pulled the pin after I got the fluid level set and I have not replaced it. So long as I keep seeing the numbers above, I'll let it run as designed.

I do wish Toyota would have set the thermostat to 175° instead of 200°.
