I'm looking to put a new bumper with recovery points on my truck. I'm looking at NYTOP and CBI as my top options. Not sure if I'm adding a winch in the future, but mainly want the one that looks the best. Anyone have an opinion?

    NYTOP:

I don't need an entire bumper, just something to deflect the occasional mentally challenged deer. Suggestions on that?

No offense, but those won't help you against a deer hit. But, between the 2, my vote is for the CBI.
This is what you'll need for front end protection. Unfortunately, it's only available for the 2nd gen. See first post in link above.

I don't know who makes this one, but I came accross it sometime back and always thought it looked great.

I've got the Westin and like it. Fairly straightforward install.

I installed the Ironman 4x4 Apex Bumper. It’s stout! All the sensors work as they should. I made a review about it as well if it helps anyone. I love the look and actual protection, for me the CBI Overland would let a deer right through to crunch your grille, not that any bumper would completely stop all damage.

Do all these types of bumpers require the removal of the factory aluminum crash bar?

I feel tube style pre-runner bumpers look best on these trucks. I went an ADD bumper and like the way it turned out. It's low profile and adds a winch cradle.IMG_5986.jpg

Backwoods Adventure Mods Scout bumper. Only weighs 52lbs. The factory parts you remove weigh 29lbs. Adds front tow points and a winch cradle. DV8 flip licence plate mount fits nicely and clears the recessed fairlead if you're using a winch and live in a state requiring one. Minimal modification to stock parts, easy to install, looks good imo.

I think it's crazy to pay 2/3's of the cost of an aftermarket bumper for the Nytop solution. Unless you're worried about retaining the crash safety rating.

It's more nuts Toyota did this to us. I would gladly by a bumper and install myself if I didnt have to cut the oem bumper.

    You're not wrong, lol

Couple of small details I forgot to mention about the BAM scout bumper: the tow points have a decent inside radius to them so they are soft shackle friendly. Comes with quality hardware fasteners and they even give you a little bit extra. The steel tow points are fastened directly to the frame horn with a bunch of bolts in just about every available open hole. I researched a couple of the popular covert bumpers and this one looks like it had the strongest tow point attachment. Great access to the clutch and even The fair lead bolts so you don't have to pull your entire grill off to do something like add a license plate mount post install. $910 shipped. Powder coating comes standard.

Any reservations about having your tow points reduce ground clearance or approach angle? I know you actually wheel your truck so your opinion is probably a good litmus for others that could put too much stock in those things.

Where the hooks are, for them to catch on something, means you would basically be wheeling a wall for them to interfere. Most times when you are bouldering you are putting rocks under your wheels to get your clearance back and the hooks are inset enough I’ve never had them close to anything. If you were doing a water crossing with a steep bank they would likely slice through the dirt and not have enough bite to stop you. Most of the time the chunky stock bumper corners were catching on things and they are so weak I cracked them a couple of times. One even cracked against a bush. Just take your fist and whack the front corner of your bumper and watch how much shakes! That’s why the little stealth bumper wasn’t enough for me, you get hard points and a winch but no protection against stout bushes haha.

For example in Death Valley, this was before my Apex bumper, the hooks would not have caught on the rock under the passenger tire. But I slid the whole way through this section on my sliders, but I was always watching the stock approach angle for the front corners cause it’s just so low. The trade off of increased approach angle vs the hooks has not been an issue for me. I do get compliments all the time on the bumper, but I also live where protection is valued as it’s needed.

Makes sense. Thanks for laying that out. I totally agree about the plastic bumper corners.

Only option is custom if you want a true prerunner bumper at the moment. There’s a couple companies that have already made a front bumper for the 3rd gen, but only one for the rear as far as I know and I have the first one. The shops that have made bumpers will need your truck to build it on since they don’t have jigs to fab and ship.

Picked up my rear from powder today.

Saw this on westfab’s insta the other day. Looks great! Love the corner pieces and how it blends into the aggressive departure angle look. Stoked to see it maintains a hitch receiver.

Bought this for deer and pine trees. CBI can eat a bag of dicks for not including instructions with their bumper and sending you to a 5 minute YouTube video when you ask for them. I guess if you’re not an influencer you can get fucked.

But it was stout and did what it was designed to do.
