I got a little scam on FB marketplace for some ammo. I reported it, charge back, etc. All about the principle of it.

I would never be able to deal with the fact of being taken advantage of. I was in Vegas once for a week and didnt gamble a single cent, would have been to pissed off if I lost any amount of money.

I just recently got scammed by a "contractor" on FB. Delivered him some roofing tile to his job site. He paid partial of the agreed price and still owes me $340. He tried to get me to deliver more tile without paying first. Didn't think about reporting him on FB but I'll definitely do that. Been thinking about seeing if I can post him on a local popular IG channel as a "Beware" post. I believe karma will catch up to him!

I am not saying I know why they let it go, but for some, the time, energy, and extra money needed to go after the money spent is not worth it.

Not sure if that is the reason for all, but I could see that playing a part in this.

Funny thing about this small business and related cost issues. Hard to blame a fella for asking for payment upfront, as it relieve all risk from the proprietor. Not bad if they’re honest; you pay them, they get material, build it, then send it out. You have no leverage, just trust that you’re placing in a stranger.

So, how many legit businesses out there had to make big sacrifices when starting out? No capitol to start up? Get a business loan. Sell some toys. Second mortgage. You get the picture. These guys want to make a business for themselves and earn money. Weren’t we all taught as kids that there is no free lunch? You want it, take the risk and make it work. You’re going to be in the hole. Work harder, manage your emerging business, and figure it out.

This is why I am not a business owner. I am very good at my job and have a really nice chunk of the market in my industry and location. If I were gutsy enough to take money out of my home, retirement, savings, etc, I would likely be successful on my own. But, I can’t take that risk, being relatively close to retirement. And, I didn’t have the assets to leverage when I was younger. I also didn’t have the confidence to take a loan to start building a business in a field that I really wasn’t proficient at yet.

Maybe I shoulda started a Go Fund Me about 30 years ago!

I really wish I had that type of disposable, F it money where if someone didn’t follow through and treated me like garbage that I could just forget about it and move on……..sadly that’s not the case. My fun money is finite and I will be damned if someone is going to interfere with my truck mods!!!!

We have a 1st class exhaust builder right here on our forum. Because of my past dealings with him, I never considered using this "Tig Weld" shyster. When and if I can get the money together to pay up-front for my new exhaust (trade-in) I'm buying another system from Keith.

I agree. Any new business usually starts in the hole. The process that I made would leverage them not being in the hole right then, give them legal recourse, but also motivates and moves them to follow through on their side.

The legal recourse covers if they send the product but we don't send the rest of the money. Perhaps I am a simpleton here but I believe that if I shake hands with someone to purchase, I follow through. But I also expect them to follow through with what I plan on purchasing to. So, what do I know?

I'm not even sure if they have that kind of money. I think for some it may be the time aspect.

Personally, if I paid the amount of money that I am imagining here (probably $800-$1200) I would be seeking legal action to get my money back or work through my bank as interstate fraud or something.

But for some, they might have that kind of money. Others, they may not but they look at it as a learning (albeit expensive) lesson, and the hassle of going through the system is not worth the fight.

I think I'll leave the conversation of the judicial system out on this one :).

Not saying the vetted and approved vendors on this site are the only vendors around, but the list maintained here is a solid starting point.

Is $54 for a small court claim and you get up to $20,000. Is another $85 for the sherif to serve the papers where the business is registered or located. Ask me how I know. It works every time. I just got $20K from a shitty home warranty company refusing to fix my 2 hvac leaking coils. I paid $23,5K for 2 x 4 Tons Trane full systems, then turn around and sue these idiots in my county court. Small claim judges usually wants you to go through mediation and all that crap. I respectfully asked to go straight to trial by jury as no respectful citizen will be against my case. It paid off. The "defended" folded and paid the $20K in full. So moral of the story, use the tools at your disposal, they work.

Now I am suing my home builder for violating builder code and not putting a shower pans in all 5 showers in my house where 2 are already leaking. This should be fun as well as they have no idea what they're walking into.

I'm not saying it is never good. What I was simply saying was for some, especially if the money is not $20K but say $500? For some the time and energy is not worth it.

But, in your case, yes. I am glad you were able to get that squared away.

Exactly, no pan liner. They used some compound type glue and they said that was code and I got the code writeup from the county office. It wasn't that. I am gonna collect the $20K and redo all of them which is a very intrusive job. Just redoing the bottom part of the showers only ( no full rebuild) and luckily I found the matching tile.

Is it leaking? They probably used some topical membrane like redgard or aquadefense? If county code doesnt allow for topical membrane waterproofing, then thats that...but those topical membranes do meet certain codes. Regardless, 20k for 5 pan redos? That gonna be enough?

Yeah the master shower is leaking for sure behind the wall, and the guest downstairs is 50/50. Who knows how long and how bad the mold will be. Based on the camera it does not look that bad, lets hope.

No the code only allows for pan liner and nothing else, so they clearly violated the code.

I don't go out of my way to be shitty to anyone..
Life is good and I have better things to do..
I may joke around with people, and they take it personally, but I don't wish anyone ill will.

My wife and I lost a $1000 deposit on a new home build when the builder pissed us off 20 years ago.
In the end, that neighborhood ended up being the ghetto central of my town.
It was the best $1000 I ever lost.
Sometimes things simply happen for a reason...

You seem to have a good life and come across as having a great disposition.
I have a hard time picturing you being a spiteful or hateful person.
But I guess in the end, you're just a random internet stranger.
You may not be the nice guy I thought you were.

Thanks for the feedback, it's always nice to look at situations from outside the scope of one's own view. One of the things I love about this forum. The outside opinions of strangers on the internet that have a lot of merit. So without sounding like I'm being an ass, I do take yours in with thoughtfulness and respect. And as much as I try my best as not being spiteful or hateful to others, when it comes to being taken advantage of, I do have a hard time just saying fuck it, I'll call it a loss and move on. Probably the Marine in me...

So generally I'll just use the charge back through my bank. No product? No problem. I'll just have my bank take my money back and walk away. Problem resolved. PayPal is used for the majority of my purchases if I'm unsure of a vendor. They have always done right by me when needed. And no negative energy is spent being hateful towards the offender.

And for the amount money we're talking about on an exhaust you're right to say that to some people, walking away from it is the easiest choice. But for me it's more the principle that people doing business without integrity that grinds my gears. And the fact that essentially people like this tig welding guy is a thief. And I personally have no place in my life for liars and thieves. Reminds me of an age old adage. You get what you give.

After having said all that, you're also correct in that generally I do have a disposition of goodwill towards people. But there are times I can be spiteful if I want that someone who stole from me to be held accountable. If that's my worst trait I'll own it.

Maybe @dirtydeeds will do a discount code specifically for those that have been hosed by TWC. Lol.

This your house. Way different than a truck exhaust. I’ve got an acreage and access to a backhoe.
Also proximity is an issue. Order from another state or in my case another country and walking away is the pragmatic way to deal with it.
    It’s about value. Personal code.
I have to admit this thread sure has serious legs about someone who shouldn’t even be thought about nor time and energy wasted on apparently. But it is interesting.
