Tow mileage abysmal

Towed a 6x12 uhaul moderately full 12-13 mpg highway I can't imagine what it must be for a heavy load

 

You ever try to run with a parachute? It isn't efficient.

 

It's less the weight than the aerodynamics. It's a small engine and when towing it's going to be in boost all the time. That eats MPGs. Such is the nature of small displacement forced air towing.

 

Not that much different, really. Get about the same towing a 6K# travel trailer.
Agree w/ Godzilla. It's less about the weight and more about how much / how often you're in boost.
Engine over 10K miles yet? My mpg's improved up to that point.

62 mph is the sweet spot I've found. 65 and over aero comes into play harder and mileage tanks.

 

No vehicle gets good mileage towing. Actually 12-13mpg is really good for towing.

 

I get 11.5 on the regular, no matter what I tow. Camper, trailer, boat... As the man said, parachute. I also have a 1.75" front leveling kit and 35" Wranglers.. So I don't expect much better.

 

Huh, that’s better than I get just driving around town.

I get 14MPG driving in Houston to work every day (or every work day)....
When I towed censored it was 7MPG.... granted, it was 33FT and 9000lbs....
Totally would not do again.... glad the tow was about 35 miles one way...

 

I end up in tears every time I'm trying to imagine how much more gas I would need to buy for this thirsty engine when it makes it to 1M miles without effort. It is almost as bad as gen3 depreciation in 3 years, or half the cost of out of warranty V6TT replacement.

That's why I don't think and just fill up and drive.
The Venza is gas saving, but small (I am 6'2) and having two kids in the backseat ain't exactly comfortable.
But the '21 CM? Hell, they can sleep spread out in the back and my wife can enjoy a nap in the front seat (need to get windshield tinted for better glare reflected to have a better nap)

708 miles on one 38g tank, with canoe on top. The light didn't even come up, so about 30g burned only. That makes it to 23+ MPG. Wife does 22+ in her V8 Sequoia. Go beat it.

23+ mpg in a 5.7, you're the world record holder.

 

If you average 15 MPG and gas is $3.30/gallon on average = $220,000 in fuel.

 

Pulled a car hauler loaded w/ a 5th gen 4runner last week. Couple hundred interstate miles, running 65-75. 13.5 mpg. Typically in the 18-20 range.

But I didn't buy it for the mileage.

 

I average more on highway.

Gen3 also consumes fuel. Need to see the difference, so that number can be compared against repairs and depreciation.

 

Right, a million miles for me is till my days end. I'm fine with that.

 

It's the magic of science: if gears are right, and rolling and air resistances are low, and engine's load is low, it does not consume much fuel.

 

That’s pretty good . When I tow my camper with my tundra I was getting 10.9 mpg when I towed with my Tacoma I was lucky if I got 9 mpg.

 

It will outlast V6TT even if Toyota finally manages to fix the bearing problem. Because 3UR is simpler and runs colder. V6TT can be as good as engine of its class can be, but higher stress is higher stress. Applies to all machinery.
