Took in the truck to get the alternator and power steering pump replaced. Technician advised I also replaced tie rods and power steering rack. Out the door was $6400. How badly did I overpay?

Nope. You got exactly what you paid for. Surely you don't have any remorse. It's done. You're good for another 100,000 miles.

20 hrs of labor? At 225$ per hour?

    That seems insane on both.

Do you have any idea how to do any of those repairs?

    This basically sums it up.

If you could have done it yourself, you over paid. But if you don't have the skill, knowledge, or tools. Going to Toyota was the correct call and it will now be in their system that they did this work.

Exactly. As these trucks age, I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to have the knowledge, tools and ability to work on them. Otherwise they become expensive fast.

So what are the book labor times for each job? That's what I was Looking for and if the labor rate was really 225$ hr.

Im in md and that just seems a lot higher than I rememebr the last time I took my tundra in for service at the dealer.

no I have Never done those repairs but I'm learning a lot with each job I undertake. Watched a power steering pump vid. Guy said it took him 4 hours in his driveway. Looked doable.

    the rack job looks involved.

    Will not disagree.
At 61 yeas of age, I dont have the desire to do this work anymore. Happy to let other qualified people Do the work but not at $225hr... That is what thought was high.

It and the engine air filter were the most reasonably priced items. Except for the 2 hours of labor to swap them

Sorry. The rate and number of hours are excessive. The alternator is a pain in the ass but not the rest. I’m no pro, don’t have a real shop but believe I could have done it in 10.

Steering rack is a PITA job in these from what I understand. Still, that bill… ouch!

FWIW - my brother got a quote for his 2019 wrangler that had a leaking rear main seal, transmission, and transfer case. Jeep quoted him $9k, I think our local mechanic did it for 1200 or 1800 (no clue how there was that big of a discrepancy). He did have to bring it back the next day to redo the rear main seal bc it was leaking again, but they redid it for free lol. The labor rate at my local Toyota dealer (capo valley) is $212 vs the local jeep was $240 an hour. I personally think the jeep dealer was allotting more hours than needed to offset the shit situation they’re in with stellantis giving them more vehicles than they can reasonably sell, but it was probably just different methods of doing the same job combined with much higher rates.
