First off the removal of the fan shroud and hoses nearby made access much easier to the tensioner. Removed 2 plastic covers, the air intake box and hose, then the PS pump and alternator. Then I proceeded to remove the top idler pulley at which time the belt came off too, the tensioner wouldn't turn CC to loosen it, someone had broken it when tightening the pulley nut.
Now armed with a new Gates belt, the routing diagram I wound the belt and pushed down the tensioner pulley and the belt won't go on. After checking the routing again I confirmed it to be correct. So, I tried to install the belt that I removed, still won't fit, its about 1/2" to 3/4" short to fitting. And I have a long, 4 or 5 inch bolt I can't find the hole for. It's one of the skinny ones, not thick like the alternator. Any help would be appreciated. Been working on vehicles for 30+ years and I am really stumped. TIA. DCMiller

    Pics would help.

Meanwhile, tips on reinstalling the serpentine belt... There was discussion on what a "pain in the ass" it is to install. I haven't had any issues. I posted my tips on how to easily remove/install the belt on our V8s over here, if it helps, you want to try my method?

Actual steps to the numbers shown here are in that linked reply ^^

Also, what is the part number on your Gates belt?

Thanks for the pics. The Gates part is K060882. I did finally get the belt back on by removing the idler pulley on top and using the bolt to thread back into the block. It was hard since I had no slack. I'm still trying to figure out why it's short and the extra long skinny bolt left over. I use the truck for work everyday so it's all put back together, so I don't have any pics of a short belt.

****Edit******* Doing some digging on the net, I found 2 belts for this engine/model. Both Gates, K060882 88 5/16", K060908, 91 3/16" that might solve my problem of too short. 2 inches sounds like a lot?

Yeah, that's a weird part number to me. I replaced mine with Gates HD (green belt) and it was GATES K060908HD (link).

If your truck doesn't have A/C then you got the wrong belt. Here is the fitment for the belt you bought. This info is pulled directly from Gates' website here: https://partshawk.com/gates-k060882-serpentine-belt.html

Who/what told you that was the correct part number?

PS, normally you need to flex the tensioner to get it over the last pulley. That means putting a wrench back on the tensioner pulley and tucking it back.

You can probably check the exact belt length on your part number and see if it's the same length as the one I and others on here have used (just gave the part number). If they're identical length, maybe it's "compatible", but ... I dunno, it's a bit concerning to me that Gates doesn't list that as the correct part for your truck (unless you have the elusive no-A/C option).

Oh, and where's the pic of the extra screw you ended up with?

@dcmille290 save you the homework. I couldn't help myself, came back to the computer b/c I was so damn curious.

Ok, so, the belt you bought is DEFINITELY for the 2UZ-FE without A/C or with a different accessory drive configuration.

It's hard to put on versus OEM because the belt you got is 2½" shorter. I guess now I'm really curious: Where'd you get that part number?

Yes I have A/C. The part number for the belt I used came from O'Rielly's, but I got the belt from Amazon. Measuring the one removed from the truck and the Gates belt I ordered are the same length. I ordered the 2" longer belt now I'm going to cut the belt on the truck now to get it off and check to be sure I didn't mess up the bolt on the upper pulley. Thanks for your help.

I'll post a photo of the bolt left over later this morning. Thanks for the help.

Here is the leftover bolt from the R &R of the tensioner.

Thanks for the help, I'm certain the Gates 908 belt is the is answer to the belt issue.

Did you pop off or loosen the A/C compressor while doing the job? If so, I wonder if that's the bolt that is ultimately hidden behind the compressor. I know you'll know what I'm talking about if you did. It looks longer than what I recall seeing on other people's vehicles but ... clearly it's something from the accessory drive, and it is smooth shaft for most of the length which tells me it passes through at least one or two ears on something.

Never buy auto parts from scAmazon. Too much counterfeit risk, and some of the counterfeits look really damn authentic. scAmazon, fleaBay, and WallyMart are dangerous places to shop these days; if you get counterfeit parts and it causes a problem or damage, who you gonna go after? How you going to prove it? RockAuto or Summit Racing both have verified supply chain, which is something those other three can't offer, and their pricing often beats scAmazon.

At least you can easily return the wrong part though, so that's nice.

Didn't touch the A/C at all. I pulled the PS pump and Alternator then removed the plastic dust shields, and then the tensioner. I have looked all over the front of the engine but can't find a hole missing a bolt.

Best bet I can offer up is to go to YouTube and lookup a video of "2000 tundra power steering pump replace" and "alternator replace" and watch the two videos. I know you have a 2001, but if you use "2000" you'll probably get videos for all of them.

Watch the videos and keep your eyes out for them to pull out that exact bolt. It's totally possible you either didn't install it, or you installed the wrong bolt in the wrong hole. But watching videos of disassembly will give you a mental checklist of fasteners to check.

This is what I'd do in your shoes. I remember swapping my alternator, there was a long bolt like that shared with the alternator, IIRC. And I think two other bolts for the alternator. But the alternator on the newer trucks may have one additional ear.

Thanks, been doing that from the 1 hour video I watched originally to get an idea of the R & R beforehand. I appreciate your help, I will find where this goes one way or another.
