timing belt is every 100,000 miles or 10 years is what I go by, and if there’s no record of ball joints being replaced just do them, just did mine cost $250 for oem and a couple hours of my time. Cheap insurance to not die or be stranded somewhere.

I also would start doing drain and fills on your transmission every oil change. Doing 3-4 quarts at a time should be fine .

"Low interference engine" is how I'd heard it called, and what I started using here, @BubbaW is right, I think I was putting the fear of Jeebus in people's soul. Bad things can happen if the belt snaps on the V8, but it's 50/50, you've got a good chance if it snaps at low RPM.

That said, Toyota says 90k/9yr ***IF*** you use OEM parts, i.e. Toyota branded (which is Mitsuboshi, not to be confused with Mitsubishi), or the Aisin kit ending in -021 on the part number. But yeah, 10yr/100k is what a lot of others are doing without issue. We've seen some of the factory belts last a long friggin time.

There was a 2006 double cab broke down in the intersection yesterday I went to help the guy he said it just died on him with no warning no lights on the dash nothing. I pulled his timing belt cover back and it was completely cracked to hell but still holding together after 250,000 miles Ended up just being a bad battery but I told him time to give the old girl some love this was a warning cry.

Either me or my dad somehow lost the paperwork for the truck so I'm not sure when mine was last done. I do know I sold the truck back to my dad in 2014 and he never got it done in the time he had it back. I'm definitely due on years, if not mileage as well. I have the kit, I just need to get a round tuit.

This is the Hooke Road roof rack for a 2nd/3rd gen Tacoma:
    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07P8DMVMT
The mounting brackets were flipped around to make it fit on the 2000 Tundra AC.
It's not perfect, but looks decent. You can hear the wind around it, but not bad.

The 14-21 Tundra skid plate actually had holes that were very close aligned with the mounting needed. All that was required was actually a couple of the holes being elongated. But I have actually heard from some people that they were able to just bolt theirs right on without any needed changes to the holes.

Maybe this should go somewhere else but I'm gonna throw it here cause I don't have a build thread.

Part of my push to sort out any deferred maintenance and finish the T-belt job on my truck was to get it solid for a 2wk Eastern Sierra backcountry ski trip. I'll keep it simple and related to the Tundra, but there was much much skiing to be had as well.

On the second day of driving we promptly exited the asphalt and went right into 4-low to find camp for the night, in a spot that gave us good access to snow-line.

    PXL_20250420_011505730.jpg

Night two was similar, but in a new spot.

    PXL_20250421_004934251.jpg

Later that week we took refuge from the winds and heat in a secluded BLM spot.

    PXL_20250423_003500412.jpg

The next day we spent all morning in 4-low, driving up to 9000', I don't have pictures of the conditions nor many from that day, but there was plenty of chunk, mild rock crawling, and a few water crossings. We skied and relocated camp.

    PXL_20250423_225143218.jpg PXL_20250424_003635472.jpg

Later on, we had a snowstorm down to 5000', followed by unexpected powder skiing.

    PXL_20250426_223119112.jpg PXL_20250427_131256387.jpg

The rest of the trip, we found beautiful spots with big views and dramatic clouds.

    PXL_20250426_012840478.jpg PXL_20250427_014147185.jpg PXL_20250428_005028591.jpg PXL_20250428_004914420.jpg

We even saw a similar truck, which reminds me. I feel like I'm getting a bit old (but not really old at all) to be living in the truck cap for this many days, with cold mornings and inclement weather, it sure we be nice to stand up sometimes, and maybe play a little less truck-tetris with all our boxes of crap under the bed platform. I am dreaming of a pop up slide in. Any wisdom on the subject would be much appreciated.

    PXL_20250428_180340320~2.jpg

When we got home, my buddy called me about buying a 1GT, which he did, and I helped him go pick it up. '06 DC V8 4x4 with aftermarket bumpers, bags, and 140k on the odo. PO had a fleet on it. My buddy is already benefiting from ya'lls wisdom when it comes to what to look for when he bought it, why his brakes are soft (LSPV and airbag combo) and many other thing that I learned from reading and interacting here.

    PXL_20250503_164826919.jpg

Washed up and cleaned the Tundra when I got home, figured I'd do the same for the Chevy too. As far as a retrospective on the truck... I had 10 ish lb of air in the bags the whole time, and was often shifting into 4 (OD off button) when pulling grades.

The truck never really felt labored and held all the gear better than my 15 Tacoma and similar to my 02 Silverado, but with a bigger back seat.

I do think that the Tacoma has better road manners, but maybe the Tundra just needs a refresh on front end rubber (rack bushings and lowers, and maybe tie rods?) as it is a little more wandery and just not as tight in the curves (yes I know it's a big truck).

Lastly. I am glad I put daystar cradles on to compliment the bags, and I was really surprised how well this truck flexed and rolled even with the swaybar (and maxxlinks) installed. It feels very capable, and I used the 1st gear lockout button all the time. I think it may flex better than my taco with the swaybar in, but it'd be a tossup with it out. I am looking forward to more challenges for the truck, but mostly I am a human powered recreationalist, so all truck challenges are a means to a different end. I wish I had a compressor with me for these types of things, as the E-rated tires are harsh with 30lb air and I would air down more if it was easier to air up.

    PXL_20250505_020433746~3.jpg

Oh, yea, my white smoke thread, never did figure it out, but the white is more blue, and the truck def burns oil when it's pulling hard up big grades (under significant load). Anyywayssss I'll probably update that thread...

    Cheers!

Beauty! Looks just like my '01, except shinier! Are those tail lights the ones from TEQ? If so, do you like them? I just put those in last night and wasn't real pleased with the fitment. Also, the reverse lights were on the top instead of the bottom, so I really had to stretch the wires to get it to reach.

    Why do you need bigger?

Next step up is 275/70r17 which is what I’m running. But you won’t see a major visual difference ‘til you hit 285/70r17 for another inch. Interesting, the visual difference on my truck between Wildpeaks in 285 and my Baja Legend EXPs in 275, the 275s look bigger, meatier strangely. The 275 rubbed way less. 285 rubbed so bad I damaged the tires.

I think your truck looks perfect right now. I’d hate to deal with the rub that next size will buy you. I had to consciously change my driving style to minimize my rubbing.

    Where's your photos? It's a photo thread!

285s are too big and heavy imo.

255/75 or 255/80 if you must.

6112s up front w/ 650 lb springs, 5160s in the rear, JBA UCAs, Suspension Maxx Links, ATS leafs w/ Wheeler's AAL and overload spring, Toyota Gloss Gunmetal TRD Wheels, Toyo Open Country AT3s 275/70/17
I went from 265/65/70s on stock suspension up to 275/70/17s w/ bilstein 6112s on 8/6. I've got no rub and I feel like it's the right size. I kinda wish it was a 1/2" or 1" taller, but rub would start to be a problem and I didn't want to deal with that. I tried on some 255s when I was at the tire shop, but for me they were just a bit skinny. To each their own - lots of guys here run 255s and like them. The only catch with the 275/70/17 size is that they are almost all E rated. So in my case I put a brand new suspension in and ended up with a rougher ride because I went from SL to E rated tires. I'm hoping there will be more options in that size next time I'm due for tires.
