Break-in oil changes...

this is true, I inspect it well after every oil change. The last oil change kid was fired (I believe) after jamming his large screwdriver into the Hybrid battery cover on my truck. It was not my intention to get him fired but I wasn't paying for it. Especially since I have a small flat head and pull it off and on without breaking a clip.

Yep, it was a 500 dollar repair and took half a day because they have to replace the surrounding battery box. I didn't think they would do anything, or thoughts were this kid might lose his job. I was pissed.

Knowing how Toyota likes to deny warranty claims these days, I wasn't going to pay for it.

 

Is there a cover you have to remove on the hv to change the oil?

 

Normally I don't think so, but I run the TRD Pro skid plate. I have not checked to see if they have stripped a bolt or anything. However, one of the dealers I go to oil change is outdoors so I can visually see them pulling the skid plate on and off. It is heavy and I am sure a PIA but they do sell a bunch of Pros so they get them as well. The oil change is similar to a pro.

 

Pretty much this. I use Costco oil, so you know it's good.

I'll probably top it off every 20k on my way to 100.

 

That youtube video that someone replied to my post with sort of proved my point. New vehicles don't get sent out with break in oil in them anymore (albeit, the content creator is not entirely correct with his reasoning why). These new toyotas ship with standard oil which reduces friction too much compared to traditional break in oil, which (theoretically) doesn't allow the piston rings to seal correctly. Granted, honing processes are much better now than in the past so maybe it's a moot point in the end. If a guy was afraid of damage being done due to wear in metals, he'd have to constantly change his oil over the course of that few hundred mile setting period. But that's a bit antithetical with the common understanding of how an engine is supposed to wear in.

I suppose you haven't read the other 650 posts that are quite useful and full of information, but then again, that would take some time and energy to do.

And you can trust Lake Speed Jr. more than anyone else on this forum. He is a Certified Lubrication Specialist and Oil Analyst and knows what he's talking about when it comes to lubrication, etc.

Oil is cheap, engines are not.

I feel like I am missing some put this is pretty much the list, but I am in my 50s now, and yes I am old.

So, cars use to be cheap and most of these models could be had for 3-7k on the used market plus I had friends that would get me into auctions and I would buy 2-3 cars at a time and flip them. The 90s and basically through the early 2000s was a great time to be a car guy.

I was searching to see what the difference between the Hybrid and Gas 3.4 liter motor is? I found out that it had to be machined or bolt holes added to accept the electric motor. I do not know if they came off the same lines, that is when I found out from a search that the Hybrid motors where put through a different process than the non-hybrid motors. I don't know for sure as when AI came about it results in a different answer. So, who knows probably all come from the same plant, do they come from the same production line? I am not sure there. Would imagine they have one working gas burners and one working Hybrid blocks. It is the only thing that makes sense unless they change programs on the machine every 2-4 blocks of gas they make 1 hybrid block. I do not see a second process for the hybrid block but I guess they could. The Japanese are a lot more efficient than that though.

 

To summarize, you made a statement of which you have no first hand knowledge or experience which makes it nothing more than jibberish.

 

I called Toyota Customer Care and the rep told me that they were made different and that the recall did not affect the Hybrids. However, it is the same stuff here as they said the Hybrid according to the NSTB is not on the recall list due to the fact that is can still work if the gas motor is gone. This has been proven to not be the case, so there has to be a reason why the gas burners are the only ones affected by the recall.

I am sure Toyota would give you a tour of the motor plant to verify how the sausage is made if you will (they won't). Since Hybrids are a smaller production line and I am not stupid. It would only make sense for them to run on a lower production line where they can maintain QA/QC more since there are less of them than all gas 3.4 liter engine. The numbers around are roughly 1-2 HVs to 10 gas burners. So, in my mind whether it be Alabama or Texas. Toyota runs two production lines. A larger line mass stamping 3.4 liter blocks left and right. Another line running hybrid blocks for probably both 4 cylinders and 6 cylinders.

Toyota didn't include the hybrids because they said the electric motor could provide propulsion. Period. That's why hybrids aren't in it. Doesn't matter that we know that's not the case now, that's the story submitted. Toyota doesn't need another reason.

I think it's a stop gap measure to spread out the repairs that early hybrids will also need. Whether or not they get their own recall remains to be seen, but I don't think that'll happen until the first is close to wrapping up.
