Long tube header questions

Hello all! Does anyone have any experience with long tube headers? I would really like to put some on my truck but have a few questions. I’m leaning towards Doug Thorley. I heard installation suck but I do not know of any reputable exhaust shops here in Colorado that I can trust. I think I will replace the mid pipes as well. I would like to hear any feedback from owners who have them.

 

After almost 15 years of building Tundra exhaust I can give you very solid advice. Get jba long tubes. And bamufflers mid pipes. And run your stock cats. Just send em to us and we will integrate em into the mid pipes.

Jba makes more hp. More torque. Are waaaaay easier to Jnstaller. Have better bottom end torque. Are stainless steel. And aren’t much mkre to upgrade to ceramic coating.

Jba will make your truck .5 seconds faster in the 1/8 Mile than thorley’s.

We can make mid pipes for either brand of header, but if you’ve ever tried to install, and tested both brands you will thank me for the advice.

In this case jba is cheaper, faster, better, and higher quality.

Please don’t see this post as bashing throrley. If jba didn’t exist thorley is great. But jba makes all others obsolete

@dirtydeeds. What are the differences between long and short tube for our trucks? Do they make short tubes for our trucks? Sorry for jumping in on your questions manguy, with my questions.

 

I have JBA LT headers and did exactly what @dirtydeeds outlined, with custom mids with my stock cats welded in and a BAmuffler TRD dual replacement exhaust. Header Install was kind of a bitch but way better than DT tubes from what I hear.

Keith is a great guy to work with and everything he does is custom to your truck and to exactly what you want. The sound and performance is amazing and would do it again.

Thanks for the replies! Does the jbl system delete all the cats? Also will it meet up with the factory Trd exhaust or do I need the mid pipes?

 

You'll need new mids with LT headers. @dirtydeeds can weld your stock cats in the JBA mids if you want to keep them

 

It’s true. Send your stock cats to us and we will integrate them into your new mid pipes. Or we can build straight piped mids.

And yep, it will bolt up to your catback.

Dumb question but can the jba headers be used in a near factory quiet system? More torque would be great but not more noise.

Most likely defeating the original purpose of unrestricted exhaust flow that headers provide.

 

Yes they can. Our muffler design absorbs sound. And is modular. The bigger the muffler the quieter it is.

If we made you mid pipes with all 4 stock cats. Catback with big Bamufflers, and helmholtz resonators it’s very quiet inside the truck and out.

 

With the custom mid-pipes using the stock cats, I'm guessing that means no CEL's to worry about too? Thanks for all the info!

 

The check engine light is always a possibility with a Tundra and aftermarket parts.

But I have a lot of tundras running around with this exact set up and no check engine light

 

@dirtydeeds what's a ballpark cost of a full system, jbl headers on back?

 

Can this setup be ran without the tuner and 87 octane? Headers with the cats in the mid pipes and your 8inch muffler? @dirtydeeds

 

Did you notice a change of MPG's under normal driving conditions? I'm thinking about ordering these headers.

 

I've been running the mids with all 4 cats welded in for about 8 months now and never had any issues with codes

 

Maybe a slight increase, but my foot became heavier once these went on lol. I also went with a larger heavier tire not too long after which my mpgs tanked so hard to tell the real gain/(loss)

 

Pricing is based on what options you choose for what parts of the system.

Happy New Years. Revival of this thread since I’m the new guy just bought a 2017 TSS tundra. Keith can u be more specific on pricing so I can start budgeting.
So far I have the bully dog tuner. Super big change. Now wanting long tube set up. So how much is it for the custom weld to cats. I buy just LT headers. Then what. And what price exactly per your recommendations. I’d still have to drive to work after I send off for custom fit. Can we run truck like that or do we have to be down while we wait?

 

Main point I need to make: You Jane to use only TRAIL tune setting once you install the long tubes. Any other tune will cause a lean condition with headers and blow your motor.

Just to clarify what you are saying. Is it necessary to have the Bullydog tuner with the LT, catted midpipes & BA catback? Or are you saying that if you have this set up and use the Bullydog, you should ONLY use the TRAIL tune?
(Asking since my LTs & mids are being installed at this moment & I don't have the Bullydog tuner)

No need for a bullydog.

If you have a bullydog, only use trail tune.

Or stock tune as it compensates for the headers no problem.

 

Are you referring to the Bully Dog tune specifically, or are you saying another tune like DAP will blow the engine?

Dap does not change afr, so it wouldn’t blow the engine with headers.

But believe me, you want a tune that actually increases horsepower

The bullydog offers several levels of performance for several different uses and configurations of your truck. It’s more than a remap do the throttle pedal and transmission shifting algorithms.
