Rock just hit my windshield on the interstate from a 18 wheeler. what are my options?

I would say talk to some glass places in your area and ask if they will install a used windshield from a junk yard, if not I don't think it's all that expensive. You have a 2002 so yours will not be complicated like a more modern truck with all the safety stuff.

A word of advise though, please fully insure your truck if it's worth 7K or more, because if you do get in an at fault accident you at least want some money towards a new ride or repairs, or if it gets stolen etc. I am assuming it probably won't cost much more than you are already paying. To each their own. My insurance asked if I wanted to cut down on coverage a few years ago when I paid the loan off, I was like hells no!!

I use Statefarm and am very happy with them so far, they actually covered my windshield 100 precent last year when a rock hit it.

This. Avoid Safelite.

State Farm (Along with many, many other insurance companies) use a company called Safelite solutions for their windshield claims process. This is not the same as the windshield company, but its still equally as sucky. Safelite solutions is a bidding service that calls around shops to get their quote and then they go with the lowest bidder. The biggest problem with this is that they don't have a parts list, labor hours, sublet invoices or any of the above. So they only have a dollar amount. This will absolutely get you an aftermarket windshield as most insurance companies do not pay for OEM glass, unless you have an OEM policy. If you don't care if the glass is OEM or not (I wouldn't on our old vehicles), then you will be fine.

Call a glass company near you and get a quote before you file through insurance. If you deductible is $500 and a new aftermarket glass install is $600 then the claim isn't really worth it.

 

I keep full coverage on all the vehicles. It gets you a rental vehicle if you cause an accident, the insurance will dispose of your vehicle for you if it's a total loss and they will pay you the value of your vehicle after its a total loss. Full coverage on my Tundra is $109 a month I believe.

But even with full coverage, in the state of GA, windshield is on you. Stark contrast to FL, where I had the windshield replaced at no cost 3 different times in my driving life due to damage. Two were even my fault, one while removing the rear view mirror, and another because of the 18s in my trunk.

We can at least be thankful that our Tundras are older and do not have the pre-collision systems. Those cost about $1300-1800 at my shop. Windshield/install/recalibrations

 

Why does a windshield need or have precollision? Isn't it some sort of sensor mounted somewhere? This isn't an f16 with some fancy heads up display or whatever..

Often the crack glue fill is free with insurance and if it breaks further insurance can cover the windshield. I would call insurance and ask what are your options. Measure the size of damage.

 

Executive Auto Glass had to do all that shit on our 2020 HiHy, I dunno how their tech did the recalibration in front of our house, but he mentioned all the newer vehicles are a PITA because of all the little sensors and shit behind the blacked out lower 10-20% of the windshield glass.

BTW, Executive Auto Glass, for our area, is pretty awesome. I'd never used them, but that's who CarMax called in to replace that windshield when we found multiple cracks in it after purchase. They used OEM glass, got the job done quick and clean, no collateral damage, car was clean as a whistle after. The guy who did our window had clearly been at it for a while. Heavy (Boston?) accent. Good dude. Knew a lot about our 1st Gen Tundras, said to give him a call if I ever needed my windshield done, and ask for him specifically. Hell if I have his name anymore though, but his accent was pretty distinct.

 

It's really for the lane trace assist/road sign assist. There is a camera where the rear view mirror sits that faces the road. It pairs with the millimeter wave radar that's located in the front bumper cover.

They started popping up in Toyota vehicles around 2016.

If a vehicle strikes an object in the roadway and causes that object to strike another vehicle, the first vehicle is at fault. Now whether that extends to rocks, a natural object, or not I couldn’t tell you.

 

It doesn't sadly, rocks are a hard thing to prove origin of fault, meaning did nature put it their or a rock truck or kids being malicious, etc....

Modern vehicles have cameras and sensors that look through the windshield. That requires higher quality/clarity all the way to the edge of the glass.

So, the windshield itself doesn't "have pre-collision." It's the sensors that have to see through it that make it expensive.

Oh it really depends on the installer, I fully admit there are some crappy ones and some fantastic ones out there. I used to deal with a safelite location directly when I worked at carmax, they were around weekly. Just need the right guy, but that can happen anywhere you go unfortunately.

 

I believe SC is the same as FL. Everyone pays slightly higher insurance but if wind shield has a crack that can’t be fixed you get a new wind shield, no deductible. If I remember correctly this applies to “liability only” as well. The state viewed cracked windshields as driving hazards. I wish all states had this policy.

 

Yup. When my daughter lived in ATL she would drive over here for me to service and maintain her vehicle. First thing USAA asked where did the windshield get damaged. I asked why and they said if it’s in SC no deductible but if in GA you gotta pay it. Of course our SC roads have gone to shit in the past 20 years so rock chips are now common.

 

Slightly off topic, but relevant is the ability to use classic car insurance on vehicles over 25 years young. In az classic insurance can even get you out of smog testing. Of course ya probably need another vehicle, as they’d likely ask the vehicle to not be a DD. Just fyi

 

Classic car insurance may also have policy riders like “less than 2000 miles of driving a year”, and “no racing or offroading”. Below are some screen shots of a quick search.

 

Not hagerty, they are cheaper if ya have a garage. No mileage limit, off-road ok and agreed upon payout. I’ve had no claims, so I can’t comment on that part. 2 vehicles with them cost less per year than my tundra with liberty mutual.

 

No more PPG? That’s who originally made the glass for the 2002 Tundra. I don’t know about the other years. For the two times I’ve my windshield replaced, I was able to get PPG on request.

 

My leaking windshield and roof edge rust says stay away from Safelite aka Giant glass (here at least).
