My driver side rear window exploded on the way home. Anyone have this happen? Think about replacing it myself, curious on if anyone has done this before. Stealership has one in stock.

I’ve replaced three windows on a Corolla before which wasn’t too bad at all. I can’t imagine the Tundra would be any harder aside from the larger glass to deal with. Go for it!

Go for the DIY. If available I would do it.

There will be glass inside the door shell as well, if you haven't cleaned in there already. Peel back the moisture barrier and vacuum in there or you'll have a glass rattle.

If you look at the bottom of the vapor barrier, you can see the butyl caulk all stringy, already pulled it back and vacuumed all the glass. It took me about an hour and a half to vacuum it all back, with the help of a trim tool and pic getting all the glass out of the crevis.

Haha, nope. My son’s older Corolla at the time had the glass mount (plastic piece glued to the bottom of the glass) snap on one of the windows. I pulled a new window from a junkyard and installed it as a replacement. The other two windows had the tint bubbling up and it was cheaper to swap the glass from the junkyard with perfect tint than to re-tint the windows he had. If I recall correctly they charged me $30 per window at the junkyard and all had perfect tint as well. A couple hours to swap all three at home and good as new.

So I just replaced the window and this job isn't exactly easy. I could not rotate the window in, so I ended up having to remove all of the window seal/trim and disconnect the guide inside the door (remove the two 10MM bolts by the back of the truck). I ended up disconnecting the guide facing the front (also used 10MM bolts), but I don't think that one is as necessary. Removing the trim allows just enough clearance to rotate the window with the corner facing the back of the door. You then have to clear the door handle/lock and once you do, then you are able to rotate it clockwise and get it fully into the door.

Removing the trim (fully) will allow you room to push the window further towards the driver seat and just enough clearance to rotate the window:

When you do this, I strongly recommend buying a replacement bottom trim. Mine broke when pulling it off.

Also, if your window is broken, I found that there was a ton of glass stuck in the trim channels. Removing the trim and guides allowed me to clean all the glass out.

Yeah, we typically replace the run channel, glass, and belt molding on window jobs as the bare minimum. The bottom trim (belt molding) is one-time-use per Toyota anyway.

Ha, nah I don't do the work on the daily. I'm a collision estimator so I write more than I do. But I did have to replace the window regulator on my grandmas Hyundai Tuscon recently and it was a bitch of a job. Their regulator is built into a thick plastic vapor barrier, so you have to replace the entire unit. They also make it damned near impossible to get a hand behind the unit to be able to reattach the window to the regulator.

I had to close my eyes and feel for the bolt holes on the glass.
