Hey all, worried I made a big mistake

Just purchased an 04 tundra, and in typical fashion was due for a timing belt. I figured with YouTube and all the manuals online I could get it done myself.

Well, all was going smoothly until I managed to roll the cam. I bumped the left cam, and it moved from the T mark maybe 40 degrees. It was like it was spring loaded. I was able to move it back, which after further research i realized was another thing that I should not have done. From my understanding, this could’ve damaged the valves. I’ve read conflicting opinions, some saying I need extreme force to damage the valves, while others say the opposite. Guess I’m just hoping for the opinion of some experts.

    Am I cooked?

    Thanks in advance!

It is spring loaded, like 16 of them per side. These engines are interference engines, but it's more like potential interference rather than always certain. some have snapped a belt at speed and not bricked their engines. You'll probably be fine, but a flexible bore scope through the spark plug holes on that side could confirm for you by inspecting the valves and pistons.

If you can move it by hand, you probably didnt hurt the valves, but if you had to put a wrench on it…a compression test will let you know.

Cam jump isn't unusual. Many of the videos you'll watch online will warn about it.

I believe one video we have in the "Timing belt master thread" sticky covers the point, and what to do after. As long as you didn't continue to spin in the same direction it jumped, I don't see a problem.

This forum page is quite possibly the best onf I've seen to cover timing marks/setting timing: https://www.toyoheadquarters.com/threads/toyota-2uz-fe-timing-belt-marks-4-7l.335/

Wouldn't the cam jump be caused by a valve closing?

It will be fine. Move the cam to the alignment marks by hand and put the belt on.

If you are still apprehensive, just know that there are non-vvti 2uz's out there that have snapped the timing belt while underway that had no issues after a new belt was put on.
