We're in the process of looking for land in ID right now; originally from MT, but have been in AZ a long time. Fly fishing and firearms are my hobbies, and there just isnt that much water here in AZ!

Awesome!! I'm just getting into fly fishing. I did it up in Wyoming on a guided trip back during Covid. Caught several fish. It was great. I have my own rod and gear now. I need to get waders and boots though.

I tried Fly Fishing years back.
While I really liked the ability to pick up your Fly and set it right back in the same place or area it got to be a little tedious.
And you kinda lose the area between you and what your casting to.
I've caught a lot of fish just bringing the lure back to the boat.
Hell, had a Bass jump out of the water as I was picking up my lure up out of the water right at the boat!!!
It is cool though...pretty much an Artform.
Watching someone who really knows what they're is kinda mesmerizing.
And another issue...you cant have anything behind you using a Fly Rod.

All good points. Yeah, you need a pretty open area. That's why I need boots and waders. But I figured for this trip I'll find what I can and do the backhand sort of casting if I have to.
And yes, I've fished with just regular spin reels since I was a kid. And therefore have caught 50 years worth of fish over my fly fishing catches. Still, it's a new hobby and it's fishing so.....I like it.

We had a place on the South Llano River in the Texas Hill Country.
It had a lot of rapids.
You'd toss your Fly at the top of the rapid and the fish would hang out at the bottom of the rapid waiting for something to come to them.
There was always at least one fish at the bottom of every rapid.
That was the most effective way to catch fish on the river using a Fly Rod.
And with it being WAY out in the Boonies you usually had the river all to yourself.
Hell...there were only 8k people in the whole county!!
I kick myself in the Ass daily for selling the place.
I could hunt deer of my porch!!
I'd crawl out of bed,put on my bathrobe and step out on the porch just before sunrise.
Having a couple feeders that went off right at sunrise guaranteed you'd get a deer!!
And the county was so loaded with Deer it had a 5 deer limit every season!!!
I ate Venison for breakfast,Lunch and dinner.

That's awesome buddy! But yeah, I know what you mean about leaving a place that was well suited to you. But, we all make the best decisions we can and deal with the consequences.

What really pisses me off is I'll never find another place like it for what we paid for it.
    We got it for $350K!!
You couldn't touch a place like it these days for less than $750K!!!
    Dumbest move I've ever made!!!

Don't beat yourself up too much buddy. Something I've learned about life is we try to make the best decisions we can and we won't know if it was the right one until after we've made it. I've made plenty of bad decisions and I'll probably make more. But that's part of living.

Yeah...I'd like to think I'm a bit smarter as I enter Geezerhood.
    Guess I'll see.
Lucky to have a Wife who talks me off the cliff when I get stupid.
