Yeah, that would be my concern as well.

Even under warranty BMW seems to encourage the dealer to "just say no"...out of warranty...after they get through laughing...they draw straws as to who's going to say "no".

Ive had about 15 BMWs. They've been better than anyone else for giving me a break on stuff that crossed the warranty line. Porsche, Toyota and Ford all about the same which is to say awful.

Everyone gets exactly what they deserve. Glad the literal ‘best of the best’ just fell in my lap when i needed it. They let common folk too close to the sun & need to pay. Not from tax payers, but from the dipshits who bought that garbage.

Who would have thought? Learned a few things in that thread but sounds like while it is true that it goes to 2 cylinders! It’s a different system with far less trouble. I am not sure what the point is of going from 4 to 2, but anyway, thanks for the info

So the fix (explanation starts at 3:00 or so mark in the video) is higher viscosity oil due to the film thickness of 0W20 being insufficient to keep the rod and crank bearings lubricated. I'm sure that property is isolated to the GM motors and in no way has any bearing (no pun intended) on it's performance in Toyota motors. 0W20 is fine in your high performance turbo V6s, really it is.

Oddly, they did the same thing with the 8 speed transmissions. Poor lubricant choice to increase MPGs alone ends up being insufficient for proper operation. The fix for poorly performing 8 speeds is to change the thin transmission fluid with a more normal and proper spec fluid. Shudder goes away and transmission begins to shift properly. EPA mandates are killing GM reliability.

Can't say I would run 0W-20 in a turbocharged application.

Hell, my Mustang goes from 5W-30 to 5W-50 racing oil due to slapping a SC on it.

I have no knowledge on the transmission fluid on these units (wouldn't surprise me even a little). I do know what they did on the Allison to attempt for increased economy. GM lowered the line pressure between shifts and when operating in higher gears. Great for feel and economy...not so great for longevity. I had my Allison retuned by Calibrated Performance and raised the pressure back up. I lost .5 mpg, but I don't use this truck for economy. Work and performance is the goal.

Its even worse at least toyota realized they had a problem and over corrected for it. GM has known this was an issue for ten years and just continues to ignore it. My bother in law has had 7 out of 8 cylinders fail and GM will only replace them one at a time as they fail. Each time out of a truck for 2-3 months and only covered the first 4

Do I understand this correctly? GM is going to "inspect" the motors, change the oil, tell the owner they are fine, and once the motor warranty is over they are off the hook? So if the motor blows up 10 miles out of warranty is GM going to fix it? No. What a crappy way to deal with a situation they created. At least Toyota is replacing motors. GM and all American car companies are just the worst when it comes to customer service. Will never buy another American vehicle.

Well, not exactly but close. If the "trigger" code has been set, engine replacement and change oil viscosity. Pretty sad really.

To this guy, I would pull the codes before taking it to GM to inspect. Total crap.

If buying a truck right now and I only needed a small truck...can't say I would buy anything new right now. My faith in all of them is just going up in smoke.

I hate leasing but increasingly believe that certain brands should only be leased. BMW being one of them. Electric cars any brand, another, as the technology is ever changing.

Had a 2022 Silverado 3.0 diesel for 43,000 miles. The engine and transmission were unequalled, but the GM bean counters shirk on a lot of parts, so longevity is an issue. The downfall will be the pollution control and electronics on the Silverados.

I'll throw my .02 in on the GM stuff from the recent experience I have had with them. We have had 2 different 3.0 diesels come through the shop, one with 89k and the other with 111k. Both trucks had check engine lights for cam/timing chain correlation. The chains on the 3.0 are on the back side of the engine and require the cab to come off and the transmission to be pulled out of the way to access all of it. There are special tools to time them of course, which aren't readily available in the aftermarket. My buddy is a service director at a GM store in town and I asked if he would be willing to lend us the tools needed and he told me no and laughed as they were currently doing the same job on a Sierra and had 2 more trucks in the lot waiting to get repaired. Supposedly that is a semi-common job for them on the 3.0 and they get $8k plus to do the repair when they fail outside of warranty which is most/all of them apparently. Not sure I would trust one of those outside of warranty after learning/dealing with that and knowing it is somewhat common.

As for the 6.2 recall, one of the guys I work with has a 24 AT4 and is under the recall. He has an appointment for them to borescope the engine to see if the serial number of the engine falls under the recall. If it does, new engine. If not, oil change for him and away he goes... Not great either way IMO

Before my Tundra had the failed lifters that chewed my cam on a 2011 Hemi 5.7 Grand Cherokee.
It had the cylinder deactivation crap. There were hundreds of the same stories with that engine on the forums in everthing from Jeep, Ram and Chrysler with the 5.7. That's that famous Hemi tick.
Complete engine replacement, luckily under a dealer provided lifetime powertrain at 150K miles.
A lot of people got stuck with that bill.
My engine replacement would have been $11,000 if I didn't have that lifetime. There was never a recall.
Never trusted that problematic vehicle after that.
My Tundra has greatly reduced my Check Engine light anxiety as I have never seen it come on after startup.
My Tundra also only loses about a mile per gallon in comparison to the Jeep without the cylinder deactivation.

I have an older version of the 6.2 in my 2016 Vette and have never had any problems with it. There have been some lifter failures reported but nothing like these newer versions. Plus, the C7s originally came with 5W-30 fills and GM later (2019 IIRC) switched that to 0W-40 which is what I run now. They did that ostensibly to allow track days without needing to put in a heavier oil... but who knows, maybe it was partly for this sort of issue. The other thing, on C7s with manual trans like mine, is never use ECO mode which is the only time the cylinder deactivation operates. The auto trans guys aren't so fotunate since cylinder deactivation works across most or all drive modes (maybe not track??) so they need to get an OBD device to disable it.

I believe Toyota set a precedent by stating "loss of motive power could cause an accident" therefore a "safety issue". Catching GM off guard from their normal "never heard of it, that's just a normal warranty issue" business model. Not to mention Toyota after seeing a threshold of failures met, Toyota themselves notified NHTSA of the issue. Whereas GM having widespread failures of similar nature "loss of motive power" now has to step up to the plate...?

I've just decided that if an automobile or equipment is not "Made in Japan" or "Assembled in America" by a Japanese company, I just don't entertain the thought of buying it...

American companies are too caught up in quarterly earnings to care about the products they put out. As long as they rake in cash from the peasants...

Also goes for diesels.. I would love a diesel truck or more powerful tractor. But emissions regulations on them just snuff them out faster now and regens just waste fuel which is 'good' for the environment...

I sold my 06 to get back into a yota. Have had a bunch of tacos and wife’s had a 4 runner and currently a new gx550. Driving the gx made me buy the tundra with the trans and engine combo..

I’ve also had a pile of Cummins and won’t ever own a new one. Deleting has become a pain and the current emissions stuff is pure garbage.

sold my 06 for 40k haha. More then it cost brand new, was a fun truck but I like the Tundra alot more honestly. The last time driving to Wyoming elk hunting with the Cummins I knew I wanted to get with modern times and get a newer truck again.

Currently we own my tundra, wife’s gx, and an oddesey to hual the 3 kiddos around and the grand parents when they wanna come with us. They have a rav4 and a taco, brother in law has a taco, 4 runner and Camry. For the last 15 years been nothing but Toyota besides me buying and flipping Cummins since I work on em everyday.

nothing has ever come close to Toyota reliability, resale, and ease of maintenance. Love em.
