    Hey everyone,
Apparently i have a gas leak and my mechanic assumes it's from the gas tank. There might be a need to replace it. I've looked online for a bit but really haven't found much. Where do you guys shop for gas tanks? What brand? Is there somekind of universal gas tank I could use to replace it?

    Thank for your input

Hmm, I used the search feature and very quickly came up with the following, which suggests the Dorman tank, and you must ignore the gallon-size discrepancy (Dorman under-reports the size). But hey, I guess we now have yet another thread for gas tanks

I wouldn't be comfortable with anyone "thinking" it's the problem. You either 100% confirm it's the problem, or you don't change the part. Both for your own reputation, and to save the customer's wallet. The fact he "thinks" that's the issue and wants to do a job that will indefinitely cost no less than $500 is ... well, that would scare the living shit out of me, to be honest.

Spectra Premium, TO32A is a decent choice.

That good old, classic adage applies: When you ASSUME, you make an ASS out of U and ME.

Assumptions can be a valid gateway to a hypothesis, and that hypothesis may lead you to a confirmed conclusion. But an assumption should never be the basis on which you put your wallet, without jumping into a hypothesis and landing at a confirmed conclusion.

Exactly. This guy's on here asking for fuel tank recommendations when he really doesn't even truly know if that's the problem. I didn't mean to sound so harsh, but dammit, I feel like there are some mechanics who just like to pad their bill with big ticket items. Pisses me off.

Trust your mechanic to mend your car
You bring it into his garage
He tightens and loosens a few spare parts
One thing's fixed, another falls apart

    ...

Trust your mechanic to make you well
You see an awful lot of him now
The quicker he makes your life fall apart
The more money you put in his pockets

Trust your mechanic to plug your holes
Trust him to make more somewhere else
Trust your mechanic, he'll always come through
    And rip you off...

Just to clarify, he hasn't told me to buy one yet, just exploring my options in case it is the tank that is problematic.

Basic smoke test with the gas cap attachment on a smoke machine will suss out a gas tank leak in under 3-4 minutes. It'll take longer to setup the smoke machine than it will to see if the tank is leaking. Smoke test would be the #1 diagnostic tool appropriate for the job.

Note* that rodents love nesting in two places in these trucks:
    - Under the V8 intake manifold
    - On top of the gas tank

When they do either, they typically chew fittings and wiring.

Only saying this because, if the smoke leaks out from above the tank, it may not be the tank, it may be the tank fittings or fuel lines running out the top.

You shouldn't have to ask. Very common test.
