Is it just me or is my truck really driving better? I just filled up today and I know it’s going to take a few tanks but it seems more responsive. It ran fine on 87 top tier…at least I thought. I was getting 19-20 consistently. Highest trip average was 24.5. Maybe I won’t see much or no change in mpgs on 93.

Toyota says the truck can run on 87. They never said it runs optimally using 87. The ecu just pulls timing to prevent knock. But that’s not going to provide optimal power that comes with higher timing tables using 93. Even in my 5.7, the truck runs noticeably smoother with less hesitation with 93 than lower octanes.

Not me. But the difference you're seeing might be related to seasonal gas blend changes.

Where in the summer blends across the board. Granted it’s 80 cents more per gallon and considering I have the 23 gallon tank. It’s not terrible as far as cost goes.

Any turbo car/truck I’ve ever had I’ve run 93 in.

not necessarily for a performance improvement, but for predetonation protection.
Even with the improvement in the air to water charge cooler, IATs on a hot day are not anything to play with.

Agree with @Daedalus I've never run anything other than 93 in my truck, or anything that has any form of forced induction.

On a 4cyl, you’re going to hit about 400whp before you reach 93octs knock limit.

I had to bump to e30 to push harder in my GTI.

I say that, to say this engine if it could hold together and had adequate fueling should do 600hp on pump gas.

If you can afford it, 93 is good insurance IMO.

Our local Costco’s 87 tank is out of commission so they’ve been selling Premium at the Regular unleaded price for over 2 months. My mpg and performance haven’t changed a bit that I can tell.

I had a 2017 Tacoma limited that loved 93. You could tell a difference not a lot, but I could feel it in the way it ran. My tundra, I cannot tell any difference at all. But I put some in anyway. I never let it get under a 1/2 of a tank. I dump 93in it every other tank.

Any modern performance vehicle with either high compression or forced induction or both will benefit power wise and longevity wise from top tier 93. The Motor Oil Geek tested and confirmed that the quality of your fuel matters as the top piston ring gets additional lubrication from fuel. But at $1 extra a gallon if you're just driving the truck and aren't worried about the next guy since you sell or trade under 100k miles maybe hard to justify.
Actually mid grade is the biggest rip off at most stations, usually only 10 to 25 cents cheaper than 93 at most stations at 89. Basically the pump mixes 2 parts 87 to one part 93. You either care or you don't.

Compression rings get enough lubrication from crankcase ventilation and leaking valve stem seals ;)

    Waste of money.

If engine is tuned for 87 it runs great on 87.

Tons of work trucks out there with a zillion miles on them running 87

    "Tuned" by whom? Toyota?
It RUNS on 87. Just fine. Does it make all the power it can on 87? No way.
Is the ECU pulling timing every time you're hard on the throttle or towing so it doesn't rattle? Yep.

It is in your head, 87 is fine. Now if you are doing road race track days and have the engine roasting hot and constantly in high boost maybe use 93. But who races Tundras??

No, I don't race my Tundra.
But I do tow, during summer heat and occasionally pretty heavy. Engine load is engine load, it doesn't know the difference.

    So, agree to disagree.

Agree if you are towing hard. Sure. I was talking about the 90% of us who are just or mostly DDing. Like the OP getting 20+ MPG on 87. He ain't towing.

Your premium fuel cost what our midgrade does.

I run octane boost in my Mustang too. Being boosted is bad ass but comes at a price.

NOTE, it will coat your plugs and 02 sensor with a reddish film. Will 100% clog a cat. BUT it truly does do what they advertise it to. Alternative is TORCO...also legti.
