tl;dr: there's no such thing like lifetime ATF Highway driving - drain&fill every 50-60k, in-town driving - 30k. Stop&go in city demands even shorter intervals.

I do my cars/trucks every year. ATF is cheap, transmission is not.

I do a tranny drain and fill every oil change on all of my vehicles. I've never once had to replace a transmission in 30 of vehicle ownership- which hasn't been easy for my vehicles...lol.

Really nothing I learned new from Vic His previous achievement was the reason I have one big Yota for myself and another one for wife. Also the video again concludes that if you keep changing fluid in a properly designed unit then it lasts basically forever. Does not last otherwise.

 

Well, guess I'm glad I spent the $1k to fly down here and 2 days for you to come to that simple conclusion.

 

There was a lot to learn. Or at least a lot to think about.

1. 10K oil change intervals. A million miles - I thought you had to change it 3-5k mile intervals?
2. 0W-20 oil. A million miles. I thought only 30W oil would protect the engine.
3. Needed a new transmission despite having a factory cooler. (A 2019 that made it million miles also needed a new transmission at 500k)
4. Needed a new transmission just like his 2007 million mile tundra. One he serviced, the other he didn’t. So do you need to service the trans fluid or not?

I’ve been tracking these million miles tundras and by my count we have 6.
3 5.7’s
1 4.6
2 4.7’s

All three of these engines are amazing. What we learned is that these older gen tundras continue to demonstrate they are bulletproof with according to this forum, bad maintenance practices.

It’s amazing the difference between this site and say the Chevy Silverado site. This site the biggest argument is which oil to use. Everything else is mostly people showing off the upgrades they have made to their truck. Go over to the Chevy site and its post after post of catastrophic failures, replacing expensive components of the vehicle, and lemon law

 

You do whatever you want. I change fluids regularly in everything that have fluids. My transmissions outlast my engines.

 

Talked to him at the dealership while he was getting oil change. I'm pretty sure he follows reccomended schedules

Tim, if I remember, the 2007 4.7L DC Tundra finished with its original transmission? And here it sounds like Victor is saying he did service that tranny, but he started later than he should have?
And the 2014 5.7L DC had a remanufactured transmission installed at around 800,000 miles? And he says he didn’t service the current tranny ever?
Also, is he saying here he never had coolant service done, ever?

It’s hard to draw parallels to Vic’s maintenance schedule when very few people drive their vehicles the way he does with very long highway trips. What works for his truck surely would not work for my use of my truck given where I drive it, the length of my trips, how much I tow etc. I guess for the average highway commuter his maintenance schedules and methods have proven to work just fine though.

 

Yes, the 2007 had the original. It lost its reverse gear and the dealership was able to fix it. In Victor's case, with how he uses the truck, he should have had the transmission fluid changed.

It is one of those things where he follows the Toyota recommended maintenance schedule, but he should have advocated for more maintenance due to his use of the truck.

And yes no coolant service. He said the a/c and heater worked just fine.

 

I'm surprised nobody has said this, but the thing that always gets me when I do million-mile truck stories is just the luck factor. I mean, how many trucks get to say 500k, 600k or more, then get taken out due to an accident, hitting a deer or animal or get hailed out? That's what gets me. It isn't just the miles, how you drove or how critical you are about maintenance if you don't have some luck on your side.

 

Well by this "site" your probably not referring to the 3rd gen forum. That Tundra section looks just like a Ford, Chrysler, GM site.

 

Yeah the third gen’s remain to be seen if they will be as reliable. Hopefully Toyota hasn’t gone the way of the domestics

 

No one has mentioned another big change vs his last million mile tundra - He’s keeping it over a million miles, tracking mileage with notebook. Not getting rid of it like his first one.

You’re gonna need to do another video or update when it does finally die. What was the final mileage? 1.25? 1.5 million miles? What finally gave out? The engine, or the truck? `Any other items need replacing after 1 million?

Then, what truck will he finally replace it with if he’s going to stay hotshotting?

 

Hotshot drivers typically don't run in the NE where traffic gets super hairy. Rural routes, suburban areas...probably up the chances of less mayhem.

When Vic wobbled the upper grille around in the video, that was exactly what I was thinking - that’s a lot of miles without hitting anything or being hit by some ding dong.

I agree with his comment about the seats - my ‘13 fits like a glove, my ‘21 less-so.. But, to be fair, my backside has been in the drivers seat of the ‘13 for 99% of those miles.

And only two new windshields?!? Seriously?!? Haha.

Glad to hear he’s going to keep driving it. I agree with @2WD - you should do an update in a couple of years when he gets to the (1 million plus) 300k club.
