How about just beadblast or wire wheel the drum, then paint it with brake paint?
Apparently Powerstop has been good to some members?

I'd just buy OEM and be done with it. They're going to get you an in-spec part every time. And if you start your order online at the national Toyota Parts site, you can get it far cheaper than they'll sell it to you at the counter.

OEM drum brake (paper) gasket: https://autoparts.toyota.com/products/product/gasket-brake-drum-4244435050

I never use the gasket, I just wire brush and antisieze it.

    OEM drums: https://autoparts.toyota.com/products/product/drum-brake-4243135210

Note: The price shown at both links is only the MSRP price!
(i.e. the price you'll pay if you walk up to the counter and buy it directly, but NOT the price you get with most dealers by starting your order online).

For example, while the drum shows as $181, if I order it for pickup at my local dealer that participates in the Toyota Parts program, this is my actual price per balanced drum, which I'll never (probably) need to replace in my lifetime.

But I would wait to buy it during one of the 25% off sales so I could get each drum for closer to $95/ea

Plastidiped over old plastidip that wouldn't come off (potentially something other than plastidip?). I'm good with these results for now

Looks good. The dip is decently durable if applied in 4-5 good coats

I wonder how it'll hold up when the tire shop kicks the outer bead on?

    It looks markedly better.

If it tears a little with tire mounting, you can use some goo gone or wd40 to melt the torn edges a little to smooth them out. Then respray the edges. Dip touches up pretty good.

Ended up doing 6 coats (4 cans worth), I can definitely live with the results--especially for a cheap option.

Good point on the mounting and touching up. I'll see how it turns out after I find a spot to take em in. Excited to get them on

I used plasti dip on my rear bumper in 2019 and it's still holding up pretty good. I've got a few places where it came off but it was because I scraped it.

Today I found out my Tundra gets 13 mpg when towing. It's towed nearly every time I've driven it since the last fill up. I'll keep after the mileage numbers.

Pulled the single axle trailer again today. Three local stops. My smaller zero turn and a Troy Bilt self propelled on the trailer.

I’m at 14.5mpg now with the 285’s. Towing my 21’ TT gets me about 8.5mpg. Towing a small utility trailer with a side by side on it gets me about 10.

I bought some pretty damn heavy 10 ply 32” muds and that affected me more than I thought it would. But I only drive my Tundra a few thousand miles a year.

    Filthyphil,

It'd be hard for us to do, but if we happen to go a few days driving the truck without towing a trailer, we'll try and get you some mileage numbers.

I'll drive the truck to Ohio at least once this summer (barring some big interruption) and I'll get a long-distance mileage number in clean condition. A friend has a 2007 Tundra double cab 2wd and I'm eager to park next to his. His is white too. :)

Pretty sure I got 12mpg pulling my 17' 3,000lb camper trailer. I get 15mpg unloaded, occasionally creeping up toward 16.

Kind of a dumb question but it has to do with what I did today regarding my Tundra . Should a really good alignment guy come close to the #s we have on the sticky w/o seeing them. My guy seemed offended when I show him the #s I was shooting for. At any rate, I did order the suspension this AM after chatting w/ Josh via email. And famous last words…. “I’m done after this….lol”

    My opinion?

A "really good" alignment guy should have no problems with reaching the numbers in the sticky thread, though I could understand the roll-your-eyes reticence of taking customer numbers in if they're not the pro. Thing is, using standard alignment numbers (where everything is in the green) with these trucks doesn't work, and tends to lend to rubbing where it's unnecessary.

Maybe your alignment guy already knows what really works with the 1st generation Tundras, and didn't need the numbers. Maybe he knows adding caster after lifting a 1st gen Tundra realy helps with tracking and rubbing. But I feel like, with all we've seen on this forum, and what I dealt with going to a Toyota/Lexus specialty shop that also does a lot of overland builds is this: Not even they wanted to put me in the ballpark of the numbers here. But nearly everyone (I can think of one conflicting case) who has used the numbers in that thread has been happy.

The person who came up with those numbers is an alignment tech who does custom alignments and is in a position where he could tweak and realign as many times as he wanted, on professional equipment, at the shop he works at. If dude doing your alignment wants to have an attitude or ego about it, I dunno what to say, other than making the guy commit to a free adjusment if his numbers lend to problems with tracking/wandering or with rubbing.

He is a 2nd generation owner of a local wheel shop here in town and someone that all the mechanics use for their suspension work. He also drives a really nice looking late model Tundra and IIRC he did mention something about having personally driven a 1st Gen back in the day. Hell if he has been doing this his whole life, that means he has 40 years experience…. So I guess I’ll stick with him…

Oh, I forgot to mention, my Tundra got complimented by two clients. I said it had the "30-30 paintjob." "It looks good at 30 feet away and 30 miles an hour." :p

Actually it does look pretty good and so far, so far, it's working fine for us. Next year, Lord willing, we'll look into getting her painted.

I had a similar experience. Very highly regarded locally owned shop, multi-generation. Dad still works there, son had taken over. Son drives a lifted Toyota with 37" tires :D

He had tons of trouble getting to the listed numbers, and when he got as close as he could, the steering wheel was off center and the truck pulled to the left.

I have tons of faith in assassin's numbers and knowledge, but it seems like it depends on your truck's modifications. For my truck with stock size tires, wheels, and ~1" lift, the custom numbers didn't work. I'd say let them do the alignment they want to do, and if it doesn't work, it should be obvious to both of you. The guy who did mine took it for test drives every time after adjusting the numbers.

Sounds like you should let the guy run with it then. The numbers in the megathread are a guideline that's worked for most people who used them, but there's no single set of numbers we can post up that are going to work for ALL first gens due to variations.

Still need to get them aligned and touch up the lip from mounting them. Also maybe do the center caps?
