I will be turning 60 this coming December. Been 4 wheeling since I was 16. I think I may have an experienced perspective on this subject. A couple of months ago I took the time to count how many sets of OEM rims/tires were for sale on my local Denver Craig's List "Tundra Parts". 65%+ were new pull offs. Most asking too much. Why in God's name would you buy a TRD for example, finance OEM alloys w/crappy tires for $2K+ and expect to get your money back on Craig's List? (which will never happen) Factory alloys are usually approx $500 a piece plus Duelers (which I do understand = suck) You can get very, very decent rims for less than $300 a piece. Not sure why Toyota can't give you a better option on tires. The "big three" does (Oh, I know. The Tundra is being pushed as the gentlemans truck.) BS!! All the new TRD's I saw Friday had Michelin LTX's. Great tire, but?? I don't really care for my XD Monster Rims, which were on my Tundra already with Nitto T Grap M/T's when I bought it. I love the TRD Pro rims. Limited # being made and yet I even see them on Craig's. (a couple of times) I guess what I'm trying to say is , why not buy a SR-5 and "DIY"?, instead a nicer Tundra and immediately dumping items you do not want to begin with? What am I not getting?

Often times a set of wheels will be specific to a certain option package, as you recognized... might not be a style or size of wheels that a person wants on the truck necessarily, yet they want the rest of what the option package offers. For instance, the Plantinum package is badass luxury... but has huge 20" wheels that are not at all my style, I'd swap with 18's ASAP. Or the 07-13 5 spoke TRD wheel.... I personally find them to be too plain and would change them out for different wheels too.

And as you said, aftermarket wheels are often quite reasonably priced, plus they come in wider sizes and different offsets which may be necessary to fit larger tires on a lifted truck. I think the wheels/tires you see are guys like most on here that lift their truck and install larger tires on wider wheels with a more negative offset to get the truck to look tougher and more aggressive.

I know when I lifted mine after I got it that I wanted some 35x12.50 Nitto's and the tire shop wouldnt install them on the 8" wide stock wheels as it was narrower than Nittos spec range. I was also required to run wheel spacers to keep the tires from rubbing my frame/skid plate/UCA etc. So for most guys lifting and running larger tires, different wheels are a necessity both for fitment, and also style(just look at all the blacked out aftermarket wheels, or even chrome ones)

I do see guys on CL trying to sell stock wheels/tires for 1100-1500 and I do think it's ridiculous. Hell I even see stock sets at $600 sit on there for months(and thats the '14+ TRD wheels too, not the basic ones). Guys certainly over-value the stock wheels/tires, but hey I guess if they can get top dollar it means more mods!

You are correct. I get that. So why not go base (iffy) or SR-5 and DIY if the first thing to do is to dump $2K+. The logic to me is not there. I realize you can't special order nowadays like you used to be able to do. I mean really "special "order. I was just curious on the mind set why people are willing to do this so easily. It's why I started this thread.

I'm trying to sell my OEM plastic bed liner on Craig's (I know, hahahahaha) First asked $100, then $70, then $50, then $45. Tomorrow $25. Tuesday = FREE, Wednesday = I pay $25 to come pick it up. :homer:

    Oh one or two.

Same reason im selling mine i could only get the options i wanted in the configuration that I got and thats a TRD off road. I cant stand the look of any factory wheels so they will be off the truck as soon as i get it.

Hell i even tried to get the dealer to swap them out with a SR5 that was on the lot so they could make a buck on them and they wouldn't.

I think it kind of comes down to manufacturers limiting the special order process (which is get, takes more work tracking the vehicle build and may be hard to have the different parts on the line for some crazy configurations) and forcing build packages, and really Toyota limits it pretty hard compared to some other manufacturers. I mean even down to limiting paint color options for some packages/trim levels, doing things like having standard bench seating on base models then requiring higher option packages just to get bucket seats instead vs just ticking an option box for seating. Then you get base models that have blacked out grilles/bumpers/and often cheaper interior trims/cloth/etc and only way to get that is higher end packages that have lots of additional options which may or may not matter to a person.

I haven't bought a new truck in years. Usually at least one year old. I got a great deal on my 07. The last newish truck I bought was my 09 Taco in 2010. Back in the day (70's) you could special order what ever you wanted. Literally. Times have changed. I just have a problem spending $40, $50K, $60K+ or more on a new truck and driving it off the lot with tire/rims you do not want. You would think the dealer could at least put new crap steel rims w/Duelers (that nobody wants). Hmmm.. You are right. Still sucks.

Base is pretty base. If you are a DIYer the base may be trick, but most want their truck pretty much good to go. By the way I got the cab mount plates. Want to get that mod done this week if possible. Still want to stop by Sparks sometime on my way to Oregon to check you out. Not really too far out of the way.

I bought the Limited package because it came with all the options I wanted as far as the interior goes, but I wish I bought the Platinum since it came with painted bumpers and grill. I'm not a big fan of chrome at all, and they will be getting color matched soon.

To sum it up... If I can buy a truck that's already done exactly the way I want it then I will. Modding is fun and all, but the aftermath of driving it after it's done is best in my opinion. So why not get there sooner?

I remember back in '74, my mom special-ordered a new Nova exactly as she wanted it. When the pricks at the Chebbie dealership got her car in, they realized they could get more coin for it than what she'd negotiated, so they sold it to someone else. Then they got in another car that was 'similar' to what she had ordered, but had extra options that she didn't want, which of course they tried to make her pay extra for. Huge shitstorm ensued and in the end she got the extras she never wanted, but didn't have to pay more than she'd already negotiated. Plus the vacation road trip she'd planned for us that summer never happened because of all the delays in getting her new wheels.

As far as my Tundra goes, I absolutely needed the OR package for how I use my truck. Fortunately I like the '13 TRD OR stock wheels, but the rugged fails had to go immediately, if not sooner. Dumped them on CL for $300 for the set. I'd rather have the garage space than squabble over trying to milk every last nickel out of a set of baloney skins that I don't want. The guy who bought them from me had just picked up a new base model Tundra and he wasn't happy with his highway tires so it was a win-win all around.

What it boils down to is people are spoiled, they just have too much money to throw around nowadays!

I wish I could swap out my crappy "styled steel wheels" but I'm gonna just paint or plasti-dip them.

I kept the styled steel wheels on my 09 Taco. Dumped the OEM wanna be tires for some Goodyear DTracs and added a spacer for about 1.5" lift. Steel is tough. Tires are much more important.

I don't mind the wheels being steel but they are just so damn ugly and they show the brake dust. I would prefer the rim used for the spare over what I have now, especially if I could paint or plasti-dip them.

Plasti Dip works pretty good on rims. Better than what I thought. Actually quite a bit tougher than expected. Just remember to use several coats.
