For the curious: price for '18 TRD Sport is ~45K

I had one on reserve and finally got the price. About 45K. I was really surprised because a cement colored one with SR5 upgrade and convenience plus off road package was 46K. I thought the Sport was going to be extra special with some extra special pricing.

    Clarification:
    • A black TRD Sport was 45K
    • A different Cement colored CM with SR5 upgrade/convenience + off road package was 46K

Why would you think the Sport is more?

I see overall from 2017 models that the 2018 Tundra runs #2k-$4k over prior years pricing. The TSS adds at lot of costs to the truck and it's standard so I was unable to delete it from my 2018 Limited Crewmax TRD Tundra.

This is going to be my first tundra, so I'm still learning. I just thought that it was going to be such a special version of the SR5, that the price would increase.

SR5 base price is exactly $1k over 2017. I built both. I did not see any changes in option or accessories that I used to build mine. Of course it was not a Sport. I chose a 2017 because of the price increase plus rebate. Add the fact that dealer's will not be discounting the 18s much until the 17s are gone and the price increase was too much for me.

I have to add that $45k is way too much for that truck. I could pick up a 2017 SR5 upgrade with TSS OR package and bedliner right now for $39,500 of less. Of course this includes $4k of rebates. If you want to over pay for the truck jump in early otherwise sit on the sidelines for a while.

The new self driving electronic features aren't free. That's probably where the bulk of the price increase comes from.

That's not bad at all. The Sport is nothing too crazy, not at all like the Pro....basically just the fake hood scoop and the front and rear sway bars.

Wonder if there is a "don't make me stop this truck!" option for parents....

Wish my '17 had some of the electronic 'goodies' of the '18, but wouldn't trade for it. Salesman friend said a customer was interested in buying my truck, but think I'll keep 'er.

I know you fell hard for that cement colour. It will be waaaaaay easier to keep clean than black, which looks beautiful and can be as reflective as a mirror IF you clean it frequently and garage it... but few people do that.

Also, I thought I didn't want to pay for the TRD upgrade on a 2x2, but drove trucks with and without and, even on well-finished roadway, the TRD was far more comfortable. You said you're not a mod-guy, and don't plan to off-road (yeah, me neither til I started drinking from this forum!), so probably get this and be done with suspension til you're ready to level or lift it.

On the other hand, your other "wants" including the scoop (unless it's on the lot and your buddy in sales will give you near employee-pricing), sway bar, and coloured brake calipers... will cost you less to do after purchase, than if you get it at first (because you'll be financing a higher purchase cost).

    A last thought:
If you order a truck, it may take months to get it. But it'll have all the accessories you want (and none of the dealer add-ons you don't want, and shouldn't have to to pay for). If you find something you like on the lot, you may be able to barter down on the dealer add-on stuff... unless you're getting employee pricing.) But, if you were told 45k, you're not getting employee pricing, so feel free to balance your friendship (making sure your friend at the dealership earns a bit) with your own financial health (you shouldn't be told you're getting special pricing then find out on a forum that you're not).

Before I bought, I did a ton of research to find the dealer cost for every option... so I could know what to offer. I decided I neede to do this because I wanted an Inferno DC, and there were very few available, so I realized I might have very little bargaining power. Google search:

James Bragg Fighting Chance Info Package

I paid the $35 or $55 cost for the reports on a 2017 Tundra and got very detailed pricing info. I felt it helped me know a good deal when I found it. I definitely saved hundreds more on my truck than
    I spent on the report.

You posting Tundra pics at your desk yet?!!

    Wow!

I’m glad I got my 2017 in June for 37 grand.

I thought about waiting for the 2018.

    Glad I didn’t!

The SR5 is the base with Sport and TRD (Limited) being the next big upgrades.
Sport will have separate options but TRD will be 4x4, TRD hardware for offroad use. Both upgrades will be several thousand over SR5. The Toyota TSS safety package is pretty much overkill for me. I don't want a bot driving my Tundra. The cost is also about $3k-$4k which IMO is why the price has gone up for the 2018s. And good luck IG you want a TRD Pro grille on your 2018 since those TSS sensors causes issues with the on board PC.

Agreed overall, especially about the TSS because a best/ worst thing about Tundra is durability and few electrical/ mechanical problems. I'd have liked to have one touch turn-signal activation (lame that we don't), but am happy to have other buyers find out how well the new TSS features work. Or don't.

TRD is available on a 2x2, at least it was through 2017. I thought it would be lame to add it to a street truck, like posing, but it makes a huge difference in driveability.

Bottom line is the 2018 is not worth the extra $3k+ it would have cost me over the 2017 I bought. Now if I was trading or selling in a 2-3 years I could recoup but that is not the plan. From a financial standpoint early in a new model year is absolutely the worst time to buy. Look at what people were paying for the turd Gen Tacomas. It was ridiculous. People who bought in to hype early on will be taking big hits when they sell.

Say someone wanted to trade in in 3 years, wouldn't it be fair to say that the newer the model, the better?

Probably. UNLESS there end up being problems with the as yet untested "advancements" on the newer model. Or if you pay 2 - 3k more for a new model than you will if you wait til the second half of the model year....

I got a 17' crewmax for $38k out the door with 4 years of tabs on included. From my research, waiting for the 2018 was not worth it at all. Also the honeycomb grill and hood scoop make the truck less desirable honestly.

Maybe I'd be more open to options if we had more than two new 2017 Crewmax available on the island. There's not a lot of shopping around here in Hawaii, not for new tundras, anyway.

Ah, yes. That makes sense. You may need to get a 2018 to get everything you want. Good luck!

Yea that would make things a little tougher for sure! Your best bet is probably to customize and order one to your exact liking then to make sure its exactly what you want. Especially for paying around $44-48k. I know this may sound crazy as well but have you searched for a truck you like on the mainland and thought about having it shipped? I know its definitely a little more expensive but you will still probably be paying less than the cost of a brand new 2018 possibly. One of my buddies had a car shipped from Japan and it was about $2-3500k with port fees and what have you. Might be worth looking into it.

I started doing a little research on shipping a car if I found one say in California. But I've heard there's extra charges on top of shipping fees (possibly a 4% "use fee"). But I did start looking into it.

On the west coast they are all 4x4s and so to get a 2wd I would have to order one which would bee full price. And for resale value, very few people here would by anything but 4x4.
