I had my oil changed on my 2013 Tundra 4.6 and the company accidentally drained all of my transmission fluid and doubled the amount of oil (adding the new onto the old).

I drove for 4 days like this until my transmission gave out. They worked with and paid to have it rebuilt. However, I am not quite sure how to determine what damage - if any - was caused by having too much oil - since the transmission gave first.

Any advice on what to feel for or have someone look at? I just don’t want to have major engine repairs done later down the road due to something that happened now.

    Thank you in advance!

I am surprised the transmission did not act up being 4 quarts low. I'm also shocked the 'tech' didn't see or smell that they had messed up. How do you change oil all day and not notice when something is off?

As far as the engine goes, unfortunately any damage would be tough to tie back to the overfill. Unless seals were blown? You could have a compression check run, but again, tough to prove it was the oil change was at fault.

Id be curious who did this? With all over these drive through oil change shops popping up, it wouldn't surprise me if it's one of those.

Yeah - I found myself surprised by a few aspects of this as well lol.

would I know if seals were blown? Or would those be something found when looking?

I see info online about what can happen WHILE there’s too much oil - but not much regarding AFTER there’s been too much oil.

It was one of those types of places - but a local one. I’m not trying to name drop more than that since they have been doing well at making it right.

You'd be surprised what kidney of mistakes sometimes can happen if you multitask and do repetitive things all day. Humans get tired and their brains wander off at times, while the rest of the body does zombie routine.

It's crazy to me how transmission can still function(4 days??) with a cup of fluid.

    Too many, but not enough....
Too much oil for 4 days is not going to cause any damage if it didn't initially.

You would have leaks or running problems.

I agree with what others have said. If it runs fine now, you are mostly likely in the clear.

The trans takes well over what the pan holds. Op would have lost maybe half the trans fluid. Still remarkable. I have a hard time believing it wasn't slipping.
