Storing a hitch when not in use

Where do you guys store your hitch when it's not being used? I hate having it sitting in the back cab and bouncing around or same laying in the bed..

 

On a towel under rear seat. Doesn't make a sound.

 

In the receiver on the back of the truck.

 

This. Goes in the receiver the moment I buy the truck and never leaves

Yes, it's under a pillow. Works better than a gun if there's a break-in.

It affects mileage, so of course it'll never ride around with me, unless I tow. Also, it's like a 40lb penalty weight if racing through a parking lot for the closest space. Don't need that.

 

In the receiver so if a derpy car rails the truck maybe the tailgate will live.

 

At home under my bandsaw, shits heavy.

I keep a aluminum shackle mount in the hitch as rear end deterrent.

 

I've got a Decked drawer unit in my bed. The receiver hitch goes in the right drawer.

 

After decades of banging my shins on the damn hitch in the early morning hours, I don’t agree with that at all!

 

I replaced it with this.

 

In one of the storage bays on my travel trailer, since that's the only time I use it.

If I left it in the receiver I would invariably find it with my shin or knee.

Doubles as a skeleton key if I ever lock my keys in the truck.

 

I no longer have a trailer but if I did I'd slip it in here.
Gotta have a "go-to" bag.

on the garage floor next to the trailer - the only thing I tow. Can't take one without the other.

 

I have different hitches for different trailers. So usually in the trailers I use them for. For those who leave it in the hitch, it’s illegal to do that in many places.

 

Illegal? Ain’t nobody got time for that.

 

Where is it illegal to leave the hitch in?

 

Probably Canada.

 

Similar to Blufin, my ball hitch is stored in a waterproof bin in the bed of my truck, along with all my other emergencies roadside gear.

I also run with 2 of these stuck in both ends of the hitch receiver to keep the road grime out when I'm not towing.

 

Every time I have had one some one steals it. So quit getting them and now just wipe out the grime

 

I bet you many states if you look at their traffic codes.

 

I’m on the second one for my wife’s Lexus…not sure whether stolen or just lost. I put a zip tie and dowel on to secure it. We’ll never use the hitch on her car.

I'd be happy to be proven wrong but it doesn't seem that it's illegal anywhere in the U.S. It is illegal if it blocks the license plate but that's not specific to trailer hitches..

 

That sucks.

I'm fortunate to live in a rural area where theft is almost non-existent. I've been using the same 2 hitch receiver plugs for over a decade.

I keep them in a bin in in the bed.
Keep your hitch in one season here in MN and that sucker will be permanently rusted into the reciever.
I keep the plastic cap on my reciever when not in use.
