Guys what do I do. We just moved to new house. My work commute is 60+ miles/day. Almost feels like too much for the tundra. I love this truck a ton and don’t necessarily want another commuter since my last 4runner. I’m almost…almost considering getting rid of the tundra for a 4th gen Tacoma. What do we say

 

What would the advantage be? Gas mileage will be practically the same.

 

Go buy a Lexus LS430 from the same era. Ask @FiatRunner, he knows. Buy one with the 3UZ-FE. It'll get great MPG and the timing belt job is supposedly easier.

 

I think it’s a little about gas mileage and mostly wear and tear on a 20 yr old vehicle. I’m expected to kind of drive all over Houston at any point in time so not saying my trucks not reliable just hate putting all that work on this truck

 

Get a civic, prius, camry, etc.; something you don't care about racking up miles with.

 

Don't even stress it. Maintain it and drive it. My truck is a work truck and I basically drive all over DFW all day. My office is a little over 40 miles and that's more like a pit stop if anything. Year to date I've done 9xxx miles. These trucks can handle it no sweat. You'll replace worn out components due to age, but if you play by the rules and get OEM or high quality parts you're not going to have issues. You will have quirks and nuances, but there's a reason why these trucks are so coveted.

There's times where I get the itch for another truck, but there's something special about these things. However, GM's baby duramax 1/2 tons are getting 25-30mpg and reliable 100k miles and that is enticing.

 

at 130k, you have to pull the motor to replace the oil pump chain.

yea I also think my truck is too nice to rack up 300k miles I love this thing it runs and rides unbelievably and I’ve put so much money in it I want it to just stay the way it is lol

 

Google "Duramax broken pushrods". A friend of mine bought one and has had pushrods break twice so far and he's not a beater.

 

I’ve got almost 300k on mine. Other than faded paint, everything has held up very well. At 25 years old, I’m contemplating replacing the leather on the front seats

 

These trucks are only getting harder and harder to find in good condition. I had to settle on mine and we all know how hard it is to find a decent 4x4. I was almost ready to fly to California to buy one, but came across this one locally. I feel like the prices on the beat up ones are going down, but the well maintained and clean ones are going up. It'll stay nice and clean as long as you keep it clean. No point in saving your girlfriend for the next guy!

 

For me, that's not even a question. Keep driving it. Why get a car payment to save on gas when the car payment plus gas is greater than or equal to the tundra gas? I'm at 335k miles and I'm about to drive to AZ for T2S for the 3rd time. I'm gonna beat it up again and drive it back home. Again. I don't DD my truck but I wouldn't hesitate to. Drive it till the wheels fall off. Then fix it and drive some more.

 

@des2mtn what's the gsmr code for T2S? I figured me and assdog could go ahead and program ours for our convoy on the way there.

 

Dunno what radio frequency is the official for T2S, probably going to be multiple ones. But if you're convoying together nearby, I would just pick a random frequency that is not one of the GMRS frequencies, that way you do not have to fight with other radio users. Something like 146.460.

Were you satisfied with these speakers? I'm considering them as well but I've read mixed reviews. Plenty of good reviews from Sequoia owners but Tundra owners have been hit or miss. They seem like a decent value and are only 20 bucks more than the foam rebuild kit for the OEM woofers.

 

Seems any mileage advantage would be offset by the price of entry. tundra is paid off.
Want to save gas and not break the bank?

This was my big beef. I wasn’t even worried about the miles, it was disheartening to see the wallet hit to fill the truck up. Truth is, my truck could use some more miles on it.

But the sad reality is, even with super insurance rates, once I added the extra vehicle on, with coverage I’d be satisfied with, I was looking at another $100/mo extra and on my worst month I may average out to $90 in gas. So I’m actually throwing away money on the 2nd, more fuel efficient vehicle, thanks to insurance.

 

A second vehicle has needs too. It must be maintained. It must be kept somewhere. It must be washed. It needs tires and windshields and all that stuff too. Unless you are a super commuter, it’s rarely worth it.

With full coverage and the car payment for a $15k car, Donut is about another $500 a month, not including gas or the other BS I'm going through on it. If I did drive it to work, and let's say it was a good gas mileage car, it would be about $50 a week to fill it up so it would be roughly $700 a month.

 

They are very efficient, but let's say you get a $5k motorcycle. Now you need to see how much $5k in gas will get you in the tundra, plus how much gas the bike will use in that break even time, plus the extra insurance. It'd be years before it broke even.
