Another one bites the dust, right?

Turns out when a Toyota dealership inspects and tells you that you'll get at least another 5+ years out of a frame, they are... incorrect. I even read the thread on buying your first gen tundra, crawled around, banged on the frame, and took a risk. That backfired.

Anyways, everything else is in great shape so I need to decide if I sell as is, part it out, or engine drop mine into a new body. Oh boy.

Also, to be clear, I was aware of the surface rust and scaling, but I figured I could get a few good years out of it. I was incorrect, as you can see.

I'm out here in eastern NC. Debating if I even want to deal with the pain of trying to part this thing out. I do have a nice topper though so hopefully I can salvage some of my pride (and finances) with that.

    What color is the body?

How is the gas tank filler door? Is it white?

Just in case you indeed decide to part her out....

Oof. 100% not ok to drive safely. Replace frame plus more.

Find yourself a used frame assembly out of AZ, CA, NM, etc. Not a rust belt state.

Speaking of rust belt. I truly don't understand why people choose to live there and deal with ALL the issues that come with it.

Just be careful using a pressure washer on the frame. You don't want to accidentally rinse the rest of it away.

someone inspected that for you in the recent past and told you it was ok?
you got under it and inspected it and thought it was ok?
you got under it and inspected it, and chose not to coat it with some sort of coating or preventative rust converter or anything?

This is my current thought but I am not sure if I want to invest the time truthfully.

I had a dealership inspect it pre purchase, and I crawled around with a flashlight and screwdriver before buying as well. Apparently not that well, though.

Gold body, and 0 clue on the gas tank filler door, I'll check later.

This is the first thing to make me laugh in two days, so thanks lol.

I love the “old man tan” color. That gave me a chuckle.

Hang in there. Life throws curves balls all the time. Rather than taking a wild swing, all you can do is a small bunt back. I’ve parted out a few vehicles in the past, but i had the space and time to do it. 9 times out of 10 it’s much easier to simply sell the whole thing off to one person. I would sell the canopy separate though.

It's destructive rust on a 22-ish year old frame notorious for destructive rusting. Not all of us can hop down to the desert to grab the best truck we can. Sorry about the frame obmack, annoying I am sure...

Most of us rust belters don't have bugs or reptiles that will kill us.
Sure is easy to get away to somewhere quiet up here in Central MN.
Some of us truly enjoy snow and winter sports motorized (ever full throttled a big snowmobile?) and non-motorized (ever cross country skied under the aurora borealis while wolves howl?!).
Ice-fishing, learning to drink coffee, and peeing outside with your Grandpa on a frozen lake are life lessons you can't replace.
Sauna with snow is an incredible experience that we get to do for months at a time if we want. Cooling down after a 210F go by rolling in the snow will wake you up from your phone scrolling and boring life.
We like the color green in the summer.

I guess I am feeling grateful (even with all the foibles) for where we are. Appreciate the reminder Superdave:):)

Well said. Some folks don't understand that some of us enjoy the fact that we get all the seasons.

I live in a salted road state ("rust belt"). I abhor the use of road salt and would rather it not be used. Cinder, sand, coal ash might be an option.
I have skied, 7 days a week, for 10 hours a day. 14 hours one day that I recall. All while getting paid to do it! :) :) :)

Another perk of living in the rust belt.

I learned awhile ago after I failed at inspecting a jeep wrangler for my wife and purchased it only to then find black chalk and spray painted spray foam and filler hiding frame holes and rot…..it was an old jeep and “only” cost me $4k but it was a lesson learned. ANY time there is delaminating or scaling rust on ANY part of a frame- run very far away. You can never truly inspect it well enough without a lift and a ton of time to ensure its integrity. I fell in love with the thought of purchasing my wife a wrangler because that’s what she wanted and it checked almost all of the boxes…..and let it jade my decision making and gloss over obvious issues. Now it’s a nonstarter - any sign of delaminating rust or scaling and I sprint away. That shit is cancerous and systemic.

My dad got ripped a new one when he bought a truck based on the seller's personality. Also he refused to allow me or a neighbor go with him to look it over and under for him.

The Tundra I bought (and joined this forum for) I took to a shop that checked the computer and got it onto their lift. I told the seller that is where I was taking it on the test drive. Had they been the least bit hesitant, I'd have ejected.

Did the same thing with a dump truck I checked out last month. I didn't buy the dump truck. I may buy it later if the seller gets close enough to what I offered.
