So, I did replaced my stock intake with K&N cold air intake 63-9036. It took me less than an hour to install it. Followed the instruction and then I tested my truck. I was happy with the sound of it, even if i did not change my exhaust. After enjoying the ride, I went to pump gas at local station and I noticed that my "distance to go" went from a full tank (400 something miles of a 32 gallon capacity tank) to 500 something. I dont know if I screwed up? Or I should be happy? Right now it seems that I fell like I saved gas. I'm watching it closely. Appreciate any input. Thank you.

I have the 2017 tundra , when i first got it, the reading was 591, then the second time i filled up it was at 560, the third time it was at 540, and now its been consistent at 522, and i have the 38 gal. I would like to know why if keep on changing, I apologize if i went off topic, maybe I should change my air filter then if you got 100 miles more.

Was the battery disconnected? The computer is probably relearning the new intake.

Mine displays between 415-424 after fill up. The computer is probably trying to learn the new intake.

When I installed the k&n intake, I definitely disconnected the battery. My second gas fill today and still 570 something distance to empty.

It's not a big deal, run it a few tanks. It will most likely change to the 420+ range

Lucky you. I started that way and now I'm down to 430 miles to empty. Keeps getting progressively worse and I try to ignore it.

when I drove mine off the lot this past weekend it said 583. I have the 38 gal tank. That's about 15mpg roughly. I'll keep on eye on mine when I fill up. I hope it stays, I'd hate to see it drop to 420-430.

My understanding of math lends me to believe 500 to 520 is fairly accurate if you are averaging around 14mpg. 420 to 415 would mean you are averaging around 11mpg on a 38 gallon tank. the problem I am having is that mine states I have around 420 miles when full and am averaging 14mpg. To test capacity and fuel efficiency (please keep in mind I normally do not let it get below 1/4 tank) I let it go to empty with the glowing light of shame and poverty on, and it said I had 3 miles remaining, but when I filled up I was only able to put slightly over 28 gallons of gas in it. so either my tank is smaller that suggested, or I should no longer have any trust in anything this truck says as it is proving to be damn liar.

Maybe someone smarter than me can chime in. But if the sending unit was off, could you still have 10 gallons in the tank with the float thinking it was on the bottom. If it thought 10 gallons was empty and 28 filled it up and it showing 420 miles to empty. That would work out to 15ish MPG for the top 28 gallons it thinks is in the tank. fuel gauge might show it being full but the computer might be thinking there is only 28 gallons in the tank. I also can't think how the truck would be running if there was only enough gas for 3 miles to empty. That would be about a 1/4 gallon ( about two full yeti cups). Was the engine running fine or sputtering.
Maybe put a FULL 5 gallon can of gas in the bed of the truck and run it past empty and see how far in the negative it will go.

Excellent idea I may just do that, because it ran fine with no sign of any kind of strain on the fuel system at all. The reason I even ran this test was because I started to notice that It was not costing very much to fill the tank from 1/4, and it would only taking about 22 gallons to fill it up. I am not certain If I should bring this to the attention of Toyota as of yet.

If it goes into the negative numbers, make sure you take pictures. showing a speed of 55 MPH when you ran out of fuel ( by the gauge) 100 miles ago would be a sure way to sell shares of stock in your Flux Capacitor research facility.

Ughhh. I wish I hadn't found this thread. LOL! So... I am just over two weeks into a new '18 CM 4x4. I was super happy to gain a 38 gallon tank after coming from a '12 CM RW 4x4. I was averaging 13.7 in the RW all day long. The dealer filled up the tank in the '18 and I just filled up for the first time this week. I didn't see the original "distance to empty" number as it took me awhile to find where that info was in this new truck. (WAY more info in this truck than the old info button!)

I just looked up the specs for the RW and they state it had a 26.4 gallon tank... yet I could only stuff about 20-21 gallons in it as I recall. This "big" tank states it's 38 gallons... yet I only got 30 gallons in there yesterday. I read in another post (titled "38 gal fuel tank?") that some of that missing (reserve) fuel is for the fuel pump. The statement below was interesting...

Seems like a LOT of reserve to me. I will be curious if @pvdubber tests the "distance to empty" past zero.

I'm hoping after breaking it in with several more tanks, a tonneau that arrives on Saturday, and maybe a cold air intake in my future... I can get to the 14 mpg range. My shoes are bigger than stock... so maybe not... but here's to hoping! This is my third Tundra... so I "get it"... but at the same time... there's no good reason that we shouldn't be getting 14-15 mpg with a Tundra that has even a few general mods to it. IMHO. The tonneau increased my MPGs on my '12 by just over 1 MPG... I went from about 12.5 to 13.7. Each decimal increase is a win on these trucks... even if only incremental. I just did the manual calculations using the stated odometer reading at the time of purchase (65), and I got about 12.5 MPG and 374 miles on that first tank... with the assumption that 30 gallons were put in it.

BTW... just curious... what octane are you all running? Might bump it up to 89 as a test too.

Specs after the first tank. Truck had 65 miles on the OD at contract.

Can fit only 30 gallons in it...

In my experience, it takes only about 30 gallons when it says it's empty. I took this right after I refilled. (It doesn't register the fill up 'til I pull away from the pump.)

Glad you posted. I've been wondering how my tank takes 8 gallons less than posted capacity.

I am in the process right now. I don't drive much I use my motorcycle during the week for work, so I am still using that tank of gas. I will let you know if I actually go through with it I am a bit OCD so it makes me anxious the more I think about it.

Keep in mind I talked to dealership I bought truck from and corporation.

So, as everyone has this, mine is the same. I saw original was 598 to empty than quickly dropped to 460. Mostly I drive is interstate. I manually figured fuel mileage and was averaging 15.5 to 16(texas higher speed limits). I said something to dealer and they tested tank size and told me it was the smaller 27 gallon tank. To keep shorter, I showed my contract paperwork showing my truck was 38 gallon tank. After showing to keep story short, he said only thing he didn't know was if the 38 gallon tank was actual compacity of 38 gallons cause mine was the first year with it. I ran mine out of gas cause I wanted to know the problem. Had exactly 5 gallons in 5 gallon tank and ran out a mile from gas station. Put 32.920 at pump. So, 38 gallon tank. Dealership told me there was nothing they could do cause it was reading on guages. Called corporation, they said the light is supposed to come at 5.6 gallons and reserve is 3 gallons. Told them I had video proof that was not the case. From what I have come to conclude, not saying I'm a scientist or all my figuring is perfect, but best I have read online is they probably have same float system as the 27 gallon tank in 38 gallon tank and the calculations to the ecm are not correct. Love my truck, only complaint I have. Hope this helps anyone experiencing this.

    Edited:
So, I see I missed a little important info. So to touch on ecm not reading correctly. My personal, again not perfect, readings of fuel level is my light comes on somewhere around 9 gallons left and my empty is 5.6 gallons. Now compare to what corporation told me. To me, that's where the big drop of estimated fuel mileage goes. Cause the fuel is there I know for sure.

Not necessarily. Depends on what mpg you're getting. I bought mine in November, and like everyone else, it said 590 at first. Now, it is February and I consistently show 530 every time I fill up. 38g tank.
