I did an oil and filter change on my 2011 5.7 this week and I noticed something odd. I added 7 quarts, started and ran it for a few minutes, then turned it off and added one more quart - so 8 quarts of new oil added. This is the capacity - right? But the dipstick shows it at the very low end of the full range; like I should add at least another 3/4 of a quart to get it to the full mark.

Is the dipstick correct or is something awry with it? I don't want to overfill the engine.

Did you look at both sides of dipstick? Did you let it sit about 5 mins before checking? Is there pool of oil under the truck?:D

I usually wipe my dipstick a few times and recheck because sometimes it shows weird, probably sometimes oil rolls off dipstick for some psychological reason.

I did check for leaks -no leaks. I drove it to work and back (60 miles) and the level was same this morning. So is the true capacity 8.5 quarts?

    Too many, but not enough....
You may not get every drop out so I always add 8.25 then check after I cleanup and it's usually pretty dang close.

O.K. Thanks for the responses. I'll top it off tomorrow morning.

Side note: I'm trying a different oil brand with this change. First time using the Valvoline Restore and Protect I read about in a thread here. I hope it quiets the timing chain noise. I'll post in that thread if it's successful.

I've read heavier oil helps with noisy components. Something with __w-30 . You can stop at some parking lot while running errands and check dipstick after truck sits around several minutes. Flat ground will give you most accurate reading.

5w30 made a considerable difference for me. You can go up to 10w40 or 15w40 I think per the manual.

My manual calls for 7.9 quarts (2016) yet my dipstick says it takes 8.5 quarts and a few years later in 2018 Toyota changed the manual and put 8.5 quarts even though the engine virtually did not change

Nothing yet except for some LED interior & exterior bulbs.
Unless these are different than the other 2 Toyotas we've had it's 1/2 quart from the bottom mark to the top mark on the dipstick so you'd be about ¼ quart low.

7.9 quarts with the filter is in the manual, I put in 8? Does the dipstick supersede the manual? I’m between the two dimples so everything should be fine.
Makes me miss my simple 1st gen Tacoma.

2008 5.7 2wd ,Amsoil signature series 5w-30 with filter changed ,7.5 quarts total, ice cold engine on level ground.
2007-2013 appears to have a different capacity, or two package has an oil cooler?

That’s absolutely correct. This comes up far too often. 07-13 had a different level on the dip stick and printing in the manual.
This is the 2nd section, everyone with the better interior in 2.5’s got more oil capacity :)

300 hectares on single tank of kerosene
As long as it is at the lower dot, on both sides of the dipstick, you are at operating level. If you aren't burning or leaking oil then the lower dot is just fine.
