I'm pretty sure the entire industry stopped using lava rocks back in the late 90s/early 2000s. Back then my dad was looking for a replacement grill around the time I was working at large retail box store. The Weber rep told me the industry shifted away from lava rocks to ceramic briquettes or flavorizer bars due to hygiene and cleaning issues with lava rocks.

If you're dead set on lava rocks, you could convert a new one to lava rocks. It'll require replacing the flavorizer bars with a grate to hold the lava rocks about the flames. You can still find lava rocks from various BBQ suppliers.

    Hope this helps.

Yeah....I tried em back in the day and they'd get saturated with grease and catch fire.
