My 2024 tundra platinum got t-boned couple weeks ago. Both driver and rear door got damaged, side curtain went off and driver seat side airbag as well. The truck is in the shop now and the estimate initially was around 20k and insurance said they will repair it. Now that the body shop took off the doors is saying that the frame behind the b-pillar might be damaged they need to cut b- pillar to see and insurance needs to decide if repair it or not a this time. Question is how much frame damage behind b-pillar can add to the final cost of repair?can insurance just decide to total it now?
    Thank you

Your frame is not behind the B-Pillar. It's the structural support for the B-Pillar that they're talking about.

Your frame runs on the underside of your tundra from front to back. It's called a "body on frame" design because the body of the truck sits on top of the frame.

Cost is what totals out a vehicle. If the cost of repairs is about 75% of your Tundras value then they will move forward with it being a total loss.

On another thread, a guy hit a deer with his '23 Capstone with 55K miles. The repair estimate was $25K, the salvage value was $30K. Apparently, since the total of those 2 numbers was more than the value of the truck before the accident, the insurance company totaled it.

I'd say your truck will likely be totaled when the repair estimate is updated, or very close.

    Good luck

Most of the time if a curtain or seat deploys the insurance just automatically calls it a loss since there is a good chance the structure is compromised.

You should do some research because insurance regulations differ by state and by carrier to determine a total loss.

There's a Fair Market Value method, which uses a percentage of repair costs to value. For example, some states regulate that if the repair costs is 70%, or higher, of the value of the auto before the accident, then it's totaled. Percentages vary by state.

There's also the Total Loss Formula. This method adds the salvage value to the repair costs. If that total is higher than the value of the auto before the accident, then it's totaled.

I'm sure it varies by region. As I stated earlier, in the deer accident, the salvage value of the '23 Platinum with 55K miles was $30K. So, I'm guessing your truck might be slightly higher due to less mileage.

But again, you need to determine which method your insurance uses to determine total loss.

Push for a total no one wants a major rebuild truck when you sell it, most likely take a bath on it then

Wow, sorry to hear about the accident. I'd push for total loss considering unseen damage to the frame's structural integrity.

Hi. Can you really push for a total? Was under impression that is totally up to the insurance and they go by the book

You are correct, insurance companies don't give a rat's ass what you want. Their decisions are based on state regulations and their specific policies.

What state is your truck registered in? It should be an easy search to determine what the total loss requirements are.

My 2010 tundra work truck two years ago had main wire harness replaced at the dealer. Cost was like 8,500$. I was gladly surprised they didn't total mine, considering she costs pennies by now. I love her deerly regardless!

Reading these total threads with a few plastic panels bent makes me worried.

So if the market value of the truck is 55k and the salvage value is 30k +20k repair cost that makes more than 75% and that’s where i am now or 75% should be just damages? I am sorry but i am just confused why they didn’t totaled then or maybe salvage value is lower

Sorry OP, I got ahead of myself. My personal experiences with t-boned vehicles and insurance claims is over 3 decades old in CA. Things have changed a lot since then so pay no mind to me.

Did you read the link I provided? It says, if the repairs plus the salvage value is 75% or more, it's totaled.

You really need to get in touch with your insurance provider to get the answers to your questions. You need a final estimate of repairs and what they are using for salvage value.

All you are going to get from this forum is a bunch of speculation and opinions. Get involved with your insurance provider, and keep pushing until you get the answers you need.

I was a victim of a hit and run one time. My insurance did a video estimate for $8000. I took it to body shop guy I knew. He handled the rest with insurance company. It ended up being $12000 to do it right. When we did video estimate. I made sure he understood I was not body shop employee and did not know for sure what I was looking at in detail.

I didn't see anything about the frame in the repair estimate.
