Hi, new to forum. Looking at tundra’s. This is a 2013 5.7. Engine seems a little louder than others I’ve heard. I recorded this video from the top of the motor, moving to the drivers side wheel well. Not very familiar with how these normally sound. 150,000 on the odo. Drives nice, good power. What do you think?

Also, first time posting video/link. Hope it works.

Says private video, can't see. Normal noises are air pumps at startup and shut down and soft tappety noises from the valve train that usually quiets down with thicker than Ow oils. Abnormal noises tend to be timing chain tensioner related, or bad accessory bearing / belt.

Thanks for the feedback. I think I fixed it, it works for me, at least?

I hear it now. Definitely louder and more rattle-y than normal. I’m guessing through the internet that’s timing chain noise.

Thanks for that, Knabores. Anyone think it could be cracked exhaust manifold? Is that a concern for Gen 2's? I know there is a small exhaust leak down stream where the two pipes run parallel, but I don't know what cracked manifold would sound like. Does the timing change issue on these ever grenade the motor? Truck is very clean otherwise and a good price............

Thanks again. This forum is a great resource and I am searching old threads for any information as well.

For a long time I wanted to be in the “noise is not normal” camp. I have resigned myself to the “these aluminum blocks are loud” camp. An exhaust leak on these can be confused with the timing chain noise and vice versa. But, this sounds pretty good. All I can really make out in the video is the very normal valve train noise.

As suggested - try 5w-30 and see if it quiets down some.

Thanks all. This is not mine, I'm looking at it to purchase. What's the likelihood a tech (either toyota or indy) can successfully diagnose a malfunctioning chain tensioner (if that's what happening). This truck is 2 hours from my house and I'm not familiar with local techs......

I sort of agree that it does sound like valve train 'noise', but I've looked at a few of these lately and this was just louder and more diesel sounding than the others. Which sends me down the rabbit hole. The last thing I need is to buy a truck and immediately have to dump $$$ into it for cracked manifolds or timing chain. Nothing is perfect, and it's not a new truck, (2013 with 150k on the odo) but its in good shape otherwise in a sea of rusty frames this one is pretty good. Thanks for all the advice! Please feel free to continue to weigh in, the more the merrier!

    Too many, but not enough....
You can actually see it if you take off the oil filling stem. If it quiets down after a bit when it's warmed up it's a good chance it's the tensioner. Good news is it won't grenade your engine but bad news is it's a rather expensive fix on it's own.

Tough to say with a video, they’re noisy engines. To me that does not sound like the loud racket a bad tensioner makes. Here is a video of mine idling with 5w30 a couple years ago after I switched from 0w20. I still wouldn’t call it quiet and it is most definitely a healthy engine. Call me crazy but I want to say it has gotten quieter than this after 4-5 oil changes using the 5w30. That, or the video just amplifies the not so nice sounds perhaps.

Sounds reasonably good to me. Nothing obviously wrong that it could be heard immediately. I also bet in person it sounds a bit different than what the phone has recorded. 5w30 will quiet it down. Or just accept the noise and keep driving on 0w20.
