Fox TRD Pro Shock Fitment Issues

Howdy. Just swapped in a complete set of 2021 TRD Pro Fox shocks (takeoffs) over the weekend onto my 2018 Tundra Platinum 4WD. Noticed the driver side sat an inch lower than the passenger side once shocks were in and test drive complete. Also noticed that the piggyback reservior on the base of each front shock was rubbing on the CV boots.

So I paid the allignment shop I go to to swap the shocks (Left to Right, Right to Left), as I just need the truck back on the road. Swapping shocks from side to side fixed the CV boot clearance issue but now the shock reservoirs are pressed squarely against the sway bar end links (according to the front office guy at the shop). For now I'm going to pay them to remove the sway bar and finish up the allignment.

Going forwards, if I hate the added sway is my only option to run the TRD sway bar up front? Will that solve my clearance issue? Meaning is the TRD sway bar and it's end links actually that different than the non-TRD front sway bar in its shape?

The allignment shop also suggested perhaps installing the TRD rear sway bar and running no front sway bar.

Any thoughts or feedback is much appreciated.

Add-A-Leaf kit in the rear, so not sure I can even run a rear sway bar, unless they make extended end links?

 

Bump. The more I think about this issue and look at pictures of the front end, I'm inclined to believe that the allignment shop may have tried to mount the shocks with the reservoirs inboard of the shock body, as I can't see how else one could get them in a position where the sway bar would rub

 

The shocks DO need to be mounted side specific. They should be labeled for passenger and drivers side. The drivers side takes into account the lean. There is more preload on the spring.
If I remember correctly, the bottom of the shock has a "D" for drivers side. And a "P" for passenger side. The spring also has a "L" that also means driver side. And the passenger side has a "R". You can kind of make that out in a couple of the pics.

And also, the front sway bar doesn't matter. The TRD Pro DOES NOT come with the TRD (red) sway bar.

Fyi- my truck is not a TRD Pro, but a Sport.

 

Thank you very much for clearing that up. As soon as I got the truck on the ground and it sat so uneven I figured I had gotten them mismatched. Interestingly there was an R and L both on each spring right below the top hat (you can see it here if you zoom).

 

Yes, there is both an L and R on each spring. You'll want the L or R facing you directly straight out to match the side you're mounting it on. Hopefully that makes since?

I can't quite make out that pic, but it looks like the R is off to the side, making the L straight out? If that's the passenger side, it's definitely wrong.

Edit- Actually just by looking at the bottom spring perch I can tell it's wrong. The bottom spring perch is higher on the driver's side to put the additional preload on the spring. You can see the difference next to reservoir vs the passenger side one from my pics.

I would definitely send pics to the shop so they can mount correctly. My guess is they may have now gotten them on the correct side, but like you mentioned, with the reservoir to the inside. If that's even possible, haha.

 

Yea that pic I shared was before I had them swap the shocks side to side, and I definitely had them mismatched. I went by an R and an L that was on the top of the top hat mount, and those markings were wrong.

I just called the shop and they're adamant that the reservoirs are facing outboard (as they should be), and that the shock body itself is still hitting the sway bar end links.

That makes no sense based upon the front geometry, so I just told them pull the sway bar and end links off, finish the allignment and I'll figure it out myself after work.

Likely more to come once I lay eyes on the truck this afternoon.

It's fixed in that the shocks are on the correct sides (and that fixed any lean it had).

Meanwhile I've been driving with no sway bar for over a month now with no issues. I just haven't made time to look into it further (due to other projects) and haven't felt unsafe without the sway bar either

 

Piggy backing on this, The rear TRD Pro shocks have a left and right? Or can the rear shock be installed on either side? I need to replace my bilstein trd pro suspension?

 

Rears are not side dependent.
