Welp that typical 30 min job turned into a nightmare for me this past weekend. Super loud squealing started all of a sudden from the front of my engine bay, and I isolated it down to being the tensioner pulley with some good ol WD-40.

I went over to NAPA to pickup the pulley they had in stock and got ready to do this “quick job.” The pulley is one of those funky “righty loosey, lefty tightys” where you crank the bolt over to the left to release the tension in order to remove the serpentine belt. Well, I did just that and just as the belt was about loose enough to slip off the damn bolt head snapped off on me. Too little room in there to drill it out, and it’s a funky situation because there’s not many EZ-Out type tools for left hand tightening bolts.

So, I’ve got to now remove the clutch fan, drain the radiator, etc. to get to the assembly itself. Figure if I have to do all that to try and drill the bolt out, might as well replace the assembly. I’d like some guidance however on if anyone has done this work before - I searched the forum and really only found posts on doing the pulley itself. Also, I’m having a hard time finding(rather deciding) on the part to order on RockAuto to get it done this next weekend.

Any help is appreciated! I really just need that reassurance on ordering the correct tensioner assembly. Hoping to add a write up with pics on this job so it’s here on the forum :)

When I replaced mine when I changed my timing belt, I used the Gates one on rockauto. It's been great to me so far. This one.

Disassembly and reassembly should be the same as it is when changing a timing belt. Three 12mm bolts on the tensioner, and two 12s and a 14 to remove the alternator blocking it. You might actually be able to keep the fan bracket in place, but I would guess that there isn't enough room to remove it without pulling the fan itself. Props to you for making it a write-up.

Thank you much for the info. Lucky for me, they have that same GATES part at the Napa Auto parts by me - no waiting :)
