Does a car seat fit in a 1st gen Access Cab (Asking for a friend)

What car seat is that you’re using?
I know it wasn’t clear before, because of I’m so good at secrets, but I am the one having a child not my friend.
We’re further along now and I’m doing some planning and trying to figure out car seats.

This car seat is a Graco Extend2fit. It's working out alright, to be honest I can't wait until I can turn it around and move it out of the middle.

Congrats!! We have the Britax and it’s extremely user friendly and easy to transfer from car to car.

 

They must have made some design changes to this car seat. I found this thread and added this exact same model to our registry, and it doesn't fit very well. If you look at the overhang it's borderline unsafe per the instruction manual. Supposed to have 80% of the base on the seat.

I wish I could go back in time and tell myself to buy a double cab in 2016. Hauling a kid in my access cab is really going to suck. I was looking forward to camping trips and other activities in the truck. A GX460 might be in our future at some point.

$20,000 cash monies. It will need a new timing belt next year but I already deducted for that.

 

Rear facing in the middle is easily doable. We plan on having another kid so whoever doesn’t have the kids will have to drive the truck. I’ll post a pic also in a bit

 

Let me know which car seat you have too. Ironically, I got this specifically because a previous person showed a picture of it fitting. The car seat we got for my wife's car actually fits better.

So the one I have doesn’t have any part hanging off the seat. It fits tightly between the seats and uses seat belts to attach. Here is the exact car seat.

I'll have to have to get Mrs Mamba to dig up the deets (assuming the seats are still being produced), but I brought 3 of our kids home from the hospital in the back of my AC. Looking back though, I think only one of them was in a seat with the actual base. The others MAY have just had the carrier buckled in . Ya know, different time back then as the oldest one to have been born during truck ownership is now 16.
I also vaguely remember once putting a seat with the base in the passenger seat and then turning off the airbag. I don't think that flys these days.

 

So how do you handle your army of kids with your truck? Assume you just don't haul kids in it often?

**Spoiler alert: you will get pooped on.

Here’s my experience and suggestions. I wish I had kept my AC and gotten a third vehicle, or had my wife get a different one. You should keep your truck as a truck. My truck was great for town, but not trips. Really, it just prolonged the inevitable that a kid was not going to fit in the back for long; especially if you have a dog.

Middle seat will work but if you go on a trip nobody can get to the child while driving if they start crying. You’ll have to stop and someone will get in the back. Child will get heavier too and reaching across to get the child in or out of the seat in the middle will get difficult. They also move and squirm.
Side won’t work for long because my short wife complained about the seat all the way forward and child behind her. Side will work if no one else is in the car cuz you will have to move the passenger seat forward.

 

(not if you magically disappear on the way to the store to buy milk & cigarettes!)

 

My wife thinks the truck will be fine. I'm just worried we won't be able to take the types of trips that we like with a kid. For two people, I had no issues driving it cross country. We even slept in the cab. Back seat was completed removed. We'll give it a shot for a while and see how it goes. I definitely don't want to sell it if I can avoid it.

 

I have bench seat so can and have carried 6 at a time: 2 upfront with me and 4 squeezed into the back seat. We take my wife's whip most paces. There are many circumstances where we take 2 vehicles.

 

You'll figure out if it will work and for how long. Things will definitely be different with a kid in the picture. It will be a very different type of trip with the kiddo. It won’t be forever, but it will look different for a bit. But you’ll figure out what works and how much you’re willing to work/suffer.

 

The biggest thing to keep in mind is that they will not be in a rear facing carseat forever. You'll struggle to keep the AC for a few years, but those will pass and you'll be able to put any straight back forward facing carseat in the backseat with plenty of room.

 

Doing more test fitting today.

Grayco Extend-2-Fit. This one really doesn't work and it's wild because someone else posted pictures of this exact model on the previous page. That's why I put it on our registry.Grayco must have updated the design. The overhang means it really doesn't work. The passenger seat also had to slide forward. We're going to try and sell it on Marketplace.








Next up, the Nuna we got for Ravioli. This one fits better but it takes a PopEye grip to sinch the middle seat belt. Very difficult to get it tight enough.

 

Yeah, once booster age came, the back seat was suddenly extremely helpful. They didn't need a booster, that seat sits pretty high.

 

And I think as long as the base is more than 60% contact with the seat, you're golden.

It fits your Tundra?

 

When our son was an infant we had one of the Graco that the baby carrier clicked into the base. Really helpful when they’re really little.
Next I splurged on the turn2me which swivels so it’s easy to take them in and out. I don’t think the turn2me fit in the AC though.
