My Capstone got in a fight with a deer this morning. Gonna miss her for a month or so. Deer darted out of nowhere. Never even saw the buck until impact. 20250318_112657.jpg

    Ouch.
But how does the deer look?

Looks like maybe the hood and headlights escaped damage? Just plastics?

Custom bug spat pattern hood, grill & bumper. Dead Live Oak leaf collection under hood, cowl and lower fenders. Beach sand custom floor covering.
Instead of piping fake engine sound into the interior Toyota should pipe Willy Nelson into external bullhorn speakers.

We had music on the motorcycle and watched a herd of Whitetail scattered in all directions except ours when a Willy Nelson song came on.

Deer was still alive, had to put a bullet in it to stop it's suffering. He was in rough shape.

It's truly sad that a deer strike on these trucks will cause thousands of $$ of damage. Heck, a large tumbleweed will take out the grille on these plastic heaps.

It was only about 20 years ago when hitting a deer with a pickup would barely dent the bumper.

I'll never forget when my buddy hit a buck in his Jeep CJ7 doing 65 mph. I was in my Jeep right behind him. The deer literally exploded in 2 halves, with the head half flying over the top of his Jeep, and the tail half going underneath. After we washed the blood off, there wasn't a scratch on his Jeep.

its sad a frontal impact will most likely damage 2 (3) or all 5 radiators. (did i miss 1 radiator ???)

    engine cooling radiator
    a/c system radiator

    inverter cooling radiator (hybrid only)

left/right water to air intercoolers (turbo's)

I'm just amazed the front edge of that tinfoil hood is intact.

it actually took the hit better than I thought one would and probably better than my 2018, much slower impact caused much more damage ( i hit a chevy malibu doing about 20)

So far estimate is at $15,000. Yes, pretty lucky that none of the hood was damaged, not even a scratch on it. It's amazing how much a headlamp on the trucks cost. Hoping I don't have to wait too long for parts. Based off the app on my phone, they've been working on it the past few days. I can see when they open the hood, or the doors so at least they've been working on it.

Yup…those were the days of ‘bumpers’…set a little off from the vehicle, steel, aluminum or otherwise and dished out as much force as the impact with you the occupants feeling it.

It’s crumple zones and corners these days designed to (hopefully)keep you protected and walking away but also ensuring your wallet is a little lighter.

    Pick your poison I guess.

    Sorry OP

They certainly are stupid. Had 3 deer hits for all the trucks listed below.
Two of these hits were deer that ran into the side of the truck!
The 1984 truck was only 3 months old when I took it hunting and on to the way to my spot I see a doe crossing the road. I slow down, watch it jump across the ditch on the right.
Thinking I was good to go I proceed forward but that dope turns around, jumps back over the ditch and puts her shoulder into the passenger door! She wasn’t hurt too bad because she walked away.
After that I was out for revenge but didn’t see any deer the rest of the day.
I think that door dent only cost around $300 to repair back then.

I agree to an extent, the designs have gotten safer. But, I think that goal could be accomplished without so much damn plastic.

I wasn't kidding when I mentioned a tumbleweed earlier. I hit one in my 2015 Tundra. The stem on it was about the the size of my thumb, and it punched a fist sized hole in the grille. IIRC, that was around a $300 replacement.

I'd take the good old days of steel bumpers and grilles any day.

Just got the latest estimate after they disassembled the front end. New estimate is $25k. Unreal how much damage a deer can do when driving 45mph. Toyota dealer said insurance is thinking about totaling it out. Figure they are paying for a rental, diminished value of around $5-8k, they are up around $36000 total. 2023 Capstone with 55,000 miles is probably worth around $50,000.

Holy shit! Apparently trucks are disposable items these days.

I hit 2 deer with a 2002 F250. That truck was a POS relliability-wise, but it took both deer strikes with nothing but a wrinkled front license plate.

They totaled my truck today. I loved that truck. Someone is gonna get a really nice Tundra with a salvaged title. Now I get to see what they are gonna give me for it. It was in perfect condition before the deer. 2023 with 56,000 miles, had it serviced better than by the book. I do have the gap insurance on it that is suppose to pay me 25% over the fair market value.

Oh man. This just really sucks. I have considered getting a ranch hand or something for the front of mine. I live in deer/elk country and they pop out all the time.

Here is a guy that hit an elk at 80 mph while towing in Colorado. The truck was totaled, but damn.

They called it a loss over that? Must've deformed a frame rail or something, it doesn't look very bad in that 1st pic.

No damage to anything frame related. I really can't believe they totaled it. No issues with anything mechanical, other than the radiator mounts. Heck, two headlights are around $5000. I think with parts being in such short supply, my truck is worth more chopped into pieces than it is put together. Repair estimate at $24K, salvaged at auction probably would get $30,000, that added together put it over fair market value.

Unbelievable. What kind of world do we live in where that little bit of damage can't be fixed for less than the value of the truck?

Have you considered taking the salvaged title and fixing it yourself?

$300 LED, $250 halogen on Gen 2.5, dude. Gen 2 is like $170. Coming down from $1600 per piece of weirdly shaped luxury was nothing short of a shock. Grille is $340. Bumper is steel.

If it was a good sized buck, I think taking it with one of previous gens Tundra comes at a profit vs buying all that meat at butchery.
