Went to dealer for an oil change and the tech didn’t change my oil filter(didn’t know at the time). At around 3k miles after changing oil started seeing specs at tip of dipstick. Took it to another mechanic to change oil and that’s when I found out the filter wasn’t change. Should I be concerned? Paper from the filter was starting to mix in with the oil but thank god it isn’t metal.

Yes that is a problem, redo the oil change and filter.

Suggest that you NOT take the truck to a dealer for service.

Find a local repair shop that has good reviews or from word of mouth from others. They will do a better job and it will cost less as well.

Sounds dumb but my strategy is I change the oil on my Toyotas every 5k, I do every other one myself in my garage. The dealer does the 10k intervals. That way I know it’s done “right” at least every 10k by me and the dealer looks it over every 10k as well.

Yeah took it to a mechanic I trust had the oil and filter changed. So far so good no more flakes. Will keep monitoring but hope no damage was done. Maybe a engine flush?

There's one Fo Sho way to prevent that from happening again...........

If you're near Hoover (central) Alabama I'm happy to help with DIY.

    None....
How many times did they skip changing the oil filter? I would think they would have to skip it more than once for it to fall apart. I have heard of dealers skipping it 4 or 5 times.

Pics of the filter would help us understand.

I'd be concerned with the new filter getting clogged up with all of those particles. I definitely wouldn't drive another 10K miles before getting the next oil change.

Out of curiosity, how did you determine they didn’t change the filter?

New oil filter should be full of oil before installing. If not, engine doesn't get oil til filter fills up.

    This is not true

    This is.

I would definitely bring this up with the dealer who did / did not perform the oil change.

Shady dealer for sure. Did they charge you for a filter also? I’m shocked by this really.
