about 2,000 miles on my new 2025 Limited.

2 days ago my powered tailgate stopped working. tailgate will release and go down. gives me the caution beep at bottom telling me it won't power up. and indeed it won't power lift. i've checked thoroughly for obstructions, it's perfectly clean and free.

    any ideas? anyone experience this?

it's a real pain manually lifting it given the motor resistance.

Probably in your owners manual but apparently there's a way to turn off the power up according to this video. At least until you can get it to the dealership to have them look at it.

Just tried it. Turning it off doesn't change the up resistance.

Same here. I don't even use the auto tailgate opening feature on my '23.

This is from one of the Tacoma discussion groups who describes a similar problem with their power tailgate, might give it a shot. Got nothing to lose.

My Power tailgate worked fine when I picked it up last week. However, now it goes down and if I try to put it up it beeps twice at me. I tried unplugging it to no avail. Is there a sensor in there that has to be aligned before it goes back up? I can take to dealer, but kills a few hours. Thought I’d check here first.

Had the same issue with mine. Got it to work again by closing it manually, then turning off the power tailgate feature on dash. Turn off the truck, turn truck back on as well as the power tailgate feature. Hope it works for yours.

This powered tailgate is one of the stupidest and prissy, unnecessary features to add to a truck. It looks cool on the showroom floor but damn it's a pita. A person can lower and lift a manual tailgate faster. I wish the taillight button and dash button was just a release and the tailgate operated like my 2nd Gen tailgate. Just falls freely down with a slight spring or pneumatic arrest so it doesn't slam. Close it on your own without interference. Whoever figures out a mod for this could sell it like hotcakes.

I like the taillight button, use that all the time with your hands full.

my truck doesn't have the power gate though, just soft open

at some point its the more complicated the plumbing....

Just more useless crap to break or not work right. Ive never had trouble with a manual tailgate, and I've never fallen out of a vehicle with door open in reverse either. Stupid stuff.

I wonder if there's a company sub-culture dynamic at play in Toyota when they iterate that encourages departments or engineers to demonstrate innovation and they're just making widgets to make widgets at some point. I can't imagine who first used this tailgate and didn't feel hesitation in the back of their head as they were predicting how long it would operate correctly until it started to malfunction and turn into an irritation. Or feel impatient as it slowly raises like a handicap door in the 90's

Only issue Ive ever had with manual tailgates were the clips securing the rods to the handle on 99-05 chevy trucks I ever owned. Clips took most of the beating when pulling the rods and eventually broke...you could stick your hand up in there and pull the rods yourself and open the tailgate though....plus it took years for that to happen, not months.

upload_2025-3-25_11-6-26.jpgNot as fancy as todays models but they "always" worked and didn't require a operation manual to figure it out. ;) Oh, just being silly here, You could drive this model with the doors wide open in forward or reverse and if you wanted a massage seat just drive down a bumpy road. Not picking on anyone. I do like my truck and many do like the modern options.

I mean how lazy has the human population become. Way too much gadgets on vehicles these days in general. The future will be everyone running around in one of these.

I’d appreciate a powered tailgate! At 71, that sucker on my 21 is heavy to close 1 handed! Perhaps the fountain of youth would help? LOL!

They can add motors and buttons to automate opening and closing a fricken tailgate, but they still can't seal them well enough to keep the dust and moisture out for those of us who use a tonneau cover to keep the contents of our beds clean and dry. SMH. :monocle:

For sure. These are $70K trucks we're talking about.

I just want every vehicle to have headlights that dim automatically at the site of oncoming vehicles. If I had a nickel for every car I pass that doesn’t dim their high beams, I could retire. Sorry I’ll get off my soapbox now.

If you cannot lift a tailgate you probably shouldn't be driving a truck. I am so glad my 23 does not have this feature.

The only thing I would like in my truck is a button inside the truck that I can drop the tailgate with. I do use the taillight button almost exclusively. Everyone gets a kick out of my son tapping the button with his hockey stick when he’s carrying his bag. It’s definitely a convenient feature

Just turn the truck off and use the button on your fob.
