Looking to possibly purchase a vehicle from a friend in the state of Wyoming and drive it back to New York State, where I live... What is the best, easiest way to do this.? I believe the insurance on the vehicle was not renewed..

If you want it and do not know anyone where the truck is that you trust and if you want it that bad, go look at it.
    Purchase vehicle
    Call your insurance company
    Get insurance
    Drive vehicle to new home.
    Easy Peasy!!:)

To do it legally, you’ll need to purchase the vehicle, insure it, and bring in the title, proof of insurance and the bill of sale to your local DMV. Then you can obtain a temporary NYS registration and temp inspection sticker as well as license plates so you can drive it home. There will be some limits on what your insurer will cover if you don’t have the truck inspected and you’ll likely need to have some pics taken to show there’s no existing damage to the truck when you take possession of it. All easy stuff but it’ll take some time to get it all together.

It’d probably be easier to have it shipped to you and dropped in your driveway and then do the DMV stuff on your own time before you start driving it. But if your friend doesn’t have insurance on it anymore, that’s a little risky too I suppose.

Along with what WNY PAT said, look up what NY requires for passing inspection and MAKE SURE this vehicle can be inspected.

Watching SMA on youtube, your state has pretty high requirements for inspection. Wyoming, probably doesn't.

Nothing would suck worse than an expensive flight, expensive vehicle (maybe, you didn't specify) and expensive drive home to not be able to inspect the thing.

How soon do you need it?

have it delivered. Usually 1000.00 +/- . Start adding up your flight, food, fuel, hotels, etc.

To drive it home, he needs a transit permit as well.

NY is interesting in what is needed to purchase a vehicle out of state.

You can get a transit permit, but the easier way to do it is to just purchase the truck, get the title in the mail, insure it and register it before you leave. Then you’ve got your plates and insurance. Unless you’re a registered car dealer, the consumer in transit permits in NY require proof of ownership, a bill of sale, and proof of insurance anyway. Might as well just pay the taxes and get the temp registration and inspection sticker while you’re there in my experience.

That might be easier if driving.

I have trust issues with vehicles that haven't been tested by myself. That is why I went and towed my Mustang home even with under 5k miles.

The OP stated he’s buying from a friend. Hopefully he’s got a good friend. Lol. but shipping would be easier, just gonna cost more. Either way, as a NYer, avoiding waiting for hours at the DMV is a way of life around here.

Shipping might be close. NY to WY 480.00 for flight. 1482 miles to the closest major city. National average of 87 octane fuel is 3.13 per gallon. That would be 185.00 for fuel if the vehicle gets 25 mpg.
2.5 days of driving, 200 for motels. 70.00 for food/drinks.

Now if the op has nothing better to do and his time is worth zero I would totally drive it.
