All major brands use similar additives. There is nothing unique about Chevron's Techron additive, despite their advertising claims.

From your view of course there is nothing unique but you're not a scientist are ya :) No offense. As I said, is the fuel formula, not the marketing.

I'm not picky about brand, but I do stay with the busier, cleaner name brand stations. I also use premium in everything that is Turbo or Supercharged.

Show me one independent study that proves Chevron's advertising claims.

Don't get me wrong, Chevron is definitely a top tier retailer. I use them when I can too. I'm just leery of any advertising claims when there isn't any scientific proof...at least none that I'm aware of.

    This.

I reached the knock limit on 93 oct with my GTI back a few years ago, at least for that car. 403Whp on 93oct shell. 26lbs of boost out of a GT3071 on a 2.0 TSI 4 cyl. Not bad at all. E30 ran it up to 440whp.

I add Chevron Techron fuel additive twice a year to my 2017 Camry but we use the gas from Costco or BJs most of the time. On trips we use Shell since I have the Rewards card from them and it gives a discount.

Best advice stick with newer stations. The old ones have more issues with water and crap in the tanks is my experience.

Based on your comment, perhaps you don't know, Costco is a top tier gasoline.

Sinclair. One that is close to me. And it's the only one that is not self serve. I pulled up and started pumping the gas and was pushed aside by the attendant lol.
This was in the St. Louis, MO area
*update note* Maybe it wasn't an actual Sinclair. The station had a sinclair sign but when I try and locate it on the Sinclair map, it does not exist.

I used to buy Top Tier from Circle K but they stopped selling it a few years back. Circle K is pretty common around here and it kind of ticked me off after they dropped it. I wish Sams would start selling it. Costco is too far away for me to benefit from cheaper gas

No ones stopping you from running 87, by all means continue to do so. As to Toyota saying its safe and such as well as these mysterious "Toyota engineers" you talk about, well, are they the same ones that caused the 200,000 engine recalls (and counting), I mean hell, I just had to take my Tundra in a second time for the same fuel line recall? Im not saying its not safe on our Tundra (and never did), but I dont want my engine having to retard itself enough to run it just because it can.

Where does it say that if you run 87 that it has to retard the timing on our trucks?

That is an old wives tale that seems to be impossible to kill. If that were the case, you would hear of broken down vehicles on the side of the road due to the "contamination".

The filters on the delivery system at the pumps take care of ANY contaminants BEFORE they get to your tank. Do not worry...

It works through the knock sensor mostly. If you run a lower octane gas, (less resistant to ignition) the sensor retards timing to compensate for the lower fuel grade. Generally forced air induction engines have always required higher octane fuel due to the higher compression ratio, as compared to naturally aspirated engines. Toyota tuned or programmed or whatever its considered, our trucks to get their best goal performance and fuel economy based on regular 87 octane. I know if my Tundra required 93 octane, I wouldn't have traded in my Tacoma.

Another confirmation from a "gas guru" to buy at the cheapest gas stations, the cheaper it is the more customer traffic, the fresher the fuel. All other things... do you really believe the cheap stations have their own refineries to produce cheap gas? Yeah right, keep dreaming.

I didn't say that. I said a newer busy station is likely to have cleaner tanks and newer fuel. That doesn't mean they are the cheapest station. A few pennies in price difference makes zero difference to me.

I also acknowledged that most stations in a given region are getting the same fuel from the distributor. That's fact. Their additives might be slightly different, but it amounts to a pimple on an elephant's butt.

But feel free to travel miles out of your way to fill up at your preferred station, if it gives you the warm and fuzzies.

Sam’s or Buc-ee’s, both convenient to me and fair prices. At Sam’s they only have low grade and premium, so it get’s Premium if I am there. It’s a little different in the high elevation where I live (Colorado, but all the same all over the Rockies) in that most stations offer 85 as the lowest octane. I still use 87 or higher. Low altitude usually has 87 as its lowest.

On road trips I usually buy whatever there is. If the gas was so bad at all these places there would be broken down vehicles piled everywhere. The locals in small towns all buy their gas at these places and somehow everything still seems to be fine. Not saying there isn’t bad fuel out there but it seems like an odd thing to be so worried about, at least in the US. Probably a bigger deal if I was on a safari in the Amazon or something.

Wrong again, the busiest stations are the cheapest ones in the area and NO ONE is looking for newest ones, 99.9% are really good.

Right, you just confirmed, another point to use the cheapest ones, more traffic, fresher gas and you pay less, and since most of the stations are good - win, win, win instead of going to more expensive and pay more for not so fresh gas,(not that it makes any difference, but for the sake of argument). In the marketing industry it is called "magic of high price"

No need to travel even 100 feet, they are usually in the same area, across the street from each other, or close to chopping or industrial centers, the ones which you have to look for are your favorites, the newest ones.

Anyways, it is your money do as you with, whatever blows your hair back :hattip:;):p:rofl:

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make, but I'll reiterate mine.

When I'm traveling and need fuel, I first look for non-ethanol. Second, I look for a newer, cleaner, and busier station. I do that because I think the chance of getting bad fuel is less, and my wife refuses to use the restrooms at dirty dive stations. I'm talking about stations that are easily accessed off the highway. I'm not going out of my way looking for them. The brand of the station, or price, doesn't matter to me.

I think we agree, as long as the fuel is clean and fresh, it doesn't matter where you buy it. Sure the additives might be slightly different in some brands, but not enough to make a significant difference.

Every gas out there has a standard by the epa as far as additives are concerned. Top tier has a higher standard. Often times top tier can be cheaper than stations like Kroger or grocery store chains. Top tier for me.

Well said. Just like all these small tourists town with small gas stations. Or maybe that's why boats break down so much from using lake gas station gas.!!
