Thank you all. Its not exactly a surprise and it ended her pain, so I am truly happy for her. Lots of family around so all is well and being handled.

Sorry to hear. My FIL waited until he got moved into our house. I truly believe they pick the time, which is kind of heartening. Hang tough, I can't say it won't continue to hurt, but it will lessen.

    Intaxication:

Euphoria at getting a tax refund, which lasts until you realize it was your money to start with.

Had a friend get his refund stolen 10 years or so back. He eventually got it, but it took him 18 months. Plus, I'm guessing the stolen money will never be recovered, which means you and I gave someone $3500 out of the goodness of our hearts. I arrange my w4s so that I always owe at tax time. There's a penalty for doing that, but it's something like $9, which I count as the cost of my insurance policy that no one will steal my refund. Plus the interest or investment gains I get on the money that wasn't sitting in our drunk uncle's bank is enough for a cigar or two.

Auto-deposit the refund. 7-10 days instead of waiting 3 weeks. Done.

I hate owning come tax time. Even if it’s $20, I go full rage mode. I try to keep my refund around $1k so any swing doesn’t take me negative. That’s my mental health insurance.

His refund wasn't stolen out of his mailbox. The thief filed using his SSN in the first week of January, and the IRS sent the check to the thief's PO box. I'd rather that never happen to me. I owe the same amount regardless of whether I pay more than I owe all year, or pay more in April.

Our system is obviously different than yours but I don't think I could set myself up to owe money or "break even" at tax time because I donate so much to charity and put so much into my RRSP (similar to a 401k, I believe).

Your W4 doesn't take post-tax check deductions like charity into account; but pre-tax items like insurance or your 401(k) could impact how much is taken out. It also impacts how much you owe, though, so it might even out some. I try to make us break even, but it's very difficult to do that. I don't mind owing at the end of the year, since I would owe it anyway. Plus, since my wife and I are both earners and my son has been off the payroll for years now, we live pretty far from paycheck-to-paycheck. I've been in the situation where, even though I'm earning well enough, between what I'm paying for bills and groceries I needed to have a more predictable (or at least unpredictable in my favor) answer at the bottom of my 1040.

Supposed to be mid 90s early next week, so I finished getting my garage cooler going today.

Not only is it now working but, and I'm quite proud of this, I didn't fall off the roof or even cause myself to bleed at all. :humble:
