To me, the 3rd Gen center console is an over-designed mess. The divider is just dumb, and that little sliding tray is too shallow to be functional for much of anything. Not to mention the thing is a noisy rattletrap.

I much preferred the center console on my 2015 1794. Just one big open box, with a nice solid fully padded and leather wrapped lid.

 

Great for keeping a big water bottle in place.

 

Is that flip-up door on the center console lid an OEM option on the higher trims? My SR5 Sport with the Softex interior just has two relatively useless open bins that you cannot really store anything in without launching it into the backseat every time you open the lid.

 

It is. I believe you can buy an aftermarket lid for it, but I know the platinum, 1794 and capstone have a nice lid to match the interior. I use it to store my gas receipts. Quite handy actually. I didn't realize the lower end trims only had a bin, and I agree its kinda dumb having an open-topped storage bin area on the flip top lid of the console. at least if you have a few flat things in the slide bin, those can stay put if you close the bin before opening the lid.

 

Does anybody know anything about this other thing in my console? It just seems like a useless hole.

Just installed a leftover light I had from footwell lighting upgrade in mine. Harness was there and total job took about 5min. Here’s my write up if you’re interested.

 

Agreed 1000%…. Whoever designed the 3rd Gen center console needs to find a new job.
As I’ve mentioned before.. Toyota needs to return the design, R&D and quality control guidelines to Japan. Gimmicky, ill perceived non functional and poor quality components have no place in a Toyota.
That’s the sole reason I’m a lifelong Toyota buyer, but Toyota today is not your father’s Toyota..

 

Howdy! You need to head over to AJT Design and get their modified cupholder. Fits Two Nalgene's nicely.

 

It must be a light on the limited and up cause it's just a hole in my SR5, I poked a little screwdriver in there (gently) to check and it went through until it hit the back of the plastic console. It's interesting to me the things they decided to drop and keep depending on the trim. Like why do I have a heated steering wheel but not an auto dimming mirror.

Wow! How cheap is that!? That and the MTS/Crawl control switch. Most of that is programmed into the truck anyway, why not just add it on every truck?? (Other than the crawl control). It's ridiculous.

 

Yeah it’s crazy especially since I have the TRD OR with the crawl control and MTS. Only thing I can think is that I don’t have the OR Premium or SR5 premium (I wanted cloth seats) so maybe it’s included with those. Toyotas have always had weird inclusions on options packages. I have a family member with a 5th gen 4Runner SR5 but it came with predator steps, TRD Pro wheels, and the full blackout package.
