2023 Toyota Tundra SR5 CrewMax 4x4 6.5' Bed. Not subject recall (yet).

This "Maintenance Required" message recently appeared. I'm fully up-to-date, even ahead of all scheduled maintenance. The sticker says I have 2,000 more miles until my next oil change.

Can I get further info on this message without visiting the dealer?

Do I need a OBD scanner and Carista to see detailed info?

    Thanks for any insight.

The manual doesn't tell me how to retrieve more information about the message.

I don't want to reset it without understanding why it's illuminated.

The owners manual tells you why it’s there. And how to reset it. And so much more

Youre totally lost. The maint req prompt is not the same as oil mant req notification. AGAIN, pick up the damn manual and read it.

These are the only mentions of the phrase "Maintenance Required" in the manual and they don't match the message appearing in my cluster.

My message is different and I was wondering why.

After reading the manual and looking for more clarification I came to the Tundra's forum since it's been a great community of resources in the past.

Now I'm wondering why all the participants in the forum are so un-kind.

The maintenance required message comes on based on miles. You’ve passed the mileage threshold. If you’re up to date on your maintenance, someone forgot to reset it last time. Just reset it following the instructions in your manual. Or go see the dealer if they do your maintenance.

If you're doing the maintenance listed in "manual", then it says to reset. Not rocket science.
YOU LITERALLY SAID, you have done all the maintenance LOL

It’s the same thing that’s in the owners manual. To be fair, including information such as you’ve already looked in the manual and still can’t understand the appropriate next steps takes the mystery out of it for the folks here who can help. Hopefully you get it sorted.

Since the two references in the manual didn't match the message in the dash, what's the harm in confirming my suspicions with a community of fellow 3rd Gen Tundra owners before going to the dealer ?

Rocket scientists, all scientists, confer with peers. It's literally science.

maint soon light is set to come on 4500 miles after last reset, maint req'd is set to 5000 miles.

its mostly tied to the rotate tires in the maint manual booklet that comes with the vehicle since the maint manual suggestion rotate tires every 5000 miles.

the maint manual booklet tells you at every mileage breakpoint what needs to be inspected or replace as needed.

if you are looking in the owners manual you are looking in the wrong manual.

usually its called the warranty and maint guide manual.

it even has a maint log you can keep track of the things you need to check.

but i am guessing you knew that already since you read thru all the manuals that came with your vehicle and not just the 1 manual.

Next time I start a conversation it will absolutely contain a screenshot of the page of the manual that led to the confusion that led me here. I'm used to coming here for "beyond the manual" questions. This forum has been super helpful.

And to be fair, I'm still curious if there's a way to get extended information about the message from either the on-board menus or from an ODB2 interface.

Even if the message stated "The miles elapsed since last reset is > 5000" or "Time elapsed since last reset >3 months" I would have more and better information than the message that doesn't exactly match any message in the manual.

It pops up every 5K miles.
By then, Toyota thinks you'll need at a minimum a tire rotation or oil change.

There is no specific reason it pops up, it's simply every 5k miles.

    Your maintenance schedule.

This guide doesn't contain the phrase "Maintenance Required". It refers to "Oil Maintenance Required" but that's not the message I'm receiving.

you only highlighted what you wanted to read.

see the paragraphs you completely ignored (i circled in red) in the owners manual that points you to the maint manual twice after the maint req'd soon you highlighted and the maint req'd you highlighted

Could be one of those maintenance items that can be entered by owner into Entune ... wiper blades, tires, battery etc?

I'm still not seeing the phrase "Maintenance Required". This is not equal to:

    "Oil Maintenance Required Soon"
    "Maintenance Required Soon"

it would say "malfunction" along with what system it is related to if it were anything to worry about. maintenance is not a malfunction, youre good

The point of the "Maintenance Required" is to get rubes to take their vehicle to Toyota and get services done, some that don't actually need on Toyota's schedule.
This is a source of income to the dealership service department.

    For instance, you go in for a tire rotation;
They say 'BTW you also need this and this and this and this'.
Me: 'No I don't, but thanks. Just do what I asked you to do'.

They love changing idiots $150 to change the cabin air filter, or wipers, or other simple things an owner can do themselves...

    Jesus Christ Dude.
At around the 4500 mile mark after the last reset, "Maintenance Required Soon" pops up.
At around 5000 miles after the last reset, "Maintenance Required" pops up.
Sorry they didn't spell it out for you in the owner's manual.
I guess Toyota gave owners more credit for having common sense.

After all the info given to you in this thread, you can't be this dumb.
I think you must be trolling at this point..

Call your service advisor and ask them since you don't like the info you have been given here.
Although I bet they know less about it than most of us.

When I bought my 2014 I asked my service guy what the box was under the passenger seat.
He said it was one of the vehicle's ECUs.
Come to find out it was the OEM Entune radio amp..

If you are in park and go to your menu and then go to the service section, there should be a grip of options. If entered, they will highlight red when they trip that indicator.

I understand your concern for verbiage, but this can be reset and move on if you are current on rotations/oil/oil filter and have a clean cabin/engine air filter.

My original question wasn't answered until "Florida AF" just chimed in with a detailed answer showing that there might be a red highlight on an indicator in the service menu. I wasn't able to find that this morning while clicking through the dash menus. So I posted here asking the question. (Thanks Florida AF)

I still don't know if an OBD2 paired with Carista or other diagnostic app will show extended information about the code that tripped the light. I cancelled my Carista app after I dialed in some initial configuration with it. Thought folks here might know.

I never asked if I could dismiss the light.
I understand perfectly well that I can dismiss the message.
My question did not ever ask if I could dismiss the message.

There's no mention of CEL in the manual or maintenance guide. It must not exist and something to ignore.

(no my CEL is not on)
