It's all logistics. Imagine buillding 102,092 replacement engines along with continuing to build engines for the new vehicle final assembly plants. On top of that, every dealership all of a sudden having every 22 or early 23 Tundra they sold showing up all at once demanding their engine replacement. At this point Toyota is implementing this campaign in 4 phases to somewhat ease the load.

98,600 for the Tundra in the US and 9,665 for Canada. These all come from TMMAL.
The Lexus LX 600 engine comes from Japan. 3,500 are included in the 24TA04 Lexus Recall.

You are correct, The 102,092 is the projected number of total engines affected across the different lines that use that variant of V35A. Still a lot of extra unplanned production of engines to cough up.

It's my understanding Toyota is recovering the majority of the "no symptoms" engines. I imagine then these engines can be disassembled and autopsied so Toyota can gather data on the full scope of the "contamination". Engines that knock or seized are not returned, then rendered unrepairable by drilling holes in block and turbos prior to disposal at the dealer.

I just got my oil changed today at my dealer in Boerne TX and he informed me an engine was being ordered for replacement on my 2022 Tundra.

I'm pretty sure I read that in Toyota's official engine swap instructions. They even instructed on how to re-use the crates to ship the running engines back to the mother ship. Non-running engines are suppose to be destroyed.

At least that's what I recall.

My 2022 Tundra Platinum is in the shop with a bad rod knock. They are going to replace the complete engine. Should I be worried about the new engine failing too? I tow a 33 ft. Travel trailer and I don't want to have to worry about it...

I'm sure this has been stated before but with 147 pages of posts just on this subject that's a lot of searching. Is Toyota providing a long block or are they providing a complete engine?

It has almost everything - just a couple belt driven accessories are transferred over is my understanding.

The real question is will they ever extend the recall to cover the rest of 2023.

I suspect we still don't know the full story on the failures. The service manager and I are cool and he swears that anecdotally, 2023's are failing at a much lesser rate than 2022's were last year with the same miles the 2023's are coming in with for service. He said 2024's, even less so.

Well, that's just great. My prediction that the original replacement schedule would not be met came true a long time ago. And my new prediction that the updated replacement schedule that had my Nov 2022 build 2023 SR5 scheduled for July would not be met has apparently also come true. It went from Phase 4, which was the last phase, now to phase 7 of 7 in the table above with replacement date TBD. LOL. So, I guess I won't be pulling off my Fumoto valve when I change my oil next week after all since it may well be another year or more before I see my new engine. I hope it doesn't fail in the interim.

The delay is due to the gasket kit being on backorder for weeks at a time. They are also having issues getting the turbine outlet gaskets in large quantities. They also just launched the remedy for the Tundra in Canada as well as the LX 600, both in the US and Canada. The LX 600, and LC 300 for that matter, is also recalled in other parts of the world.

In my opinion, there have been enough confirmed engine failures on trucks that were built after the recall dates that Toyota will eventually have to extend the recall to include all of 2023 and most of 2024.

Fairly reliable sources indicate the "machining debris" problem wasn't fully rectified until Nov 2024. That's unconfirmed, of course, and I hope it's not true.

Then there's the issue of the hybrids being excluded from the recall because they still have "motive power" after the gas engine fails. That has proven to be a false claim by Toyota. The hybrids fail in the same dangerous manner as the gassers.

Finally, there's the conundrum of failed engines that are not included in the recall are only getting short block repairs instead of the preferred complete engine swap. I find that borderline criminal, but I'm no lawyer.

    It's a mess....

What month did they go from 23 -> 24? I have 23 built in July 23.
